  • Enhancing IEEE 802.15.4-Based Wireless Networks to Handle Loss of Beacon Frames

    Even though the IEEE 802.15.4 standard defines processes for handling the loss of beacon frames in beacon-enabled low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPANs), they are not efficient nor detailed. This letter proposes an enhanced process to improve the throughput performance of LR-WPANs under the losses of beacon frames. The key idea of our proposed enhancement is to make devices that have not received a beacon frame, due to packet loss, to transmit their data in the contention period and even in the inactive period instead of holding pending frames during the whole superframe period. The proposed protocol is evaluated using mathematical analysis as well as simulations, and the throughput improvement of LR-WPANs is proved.

    Content centric network (CCN) is conceived as a good candidate for a futuristic Internet paradigm due to its simple and robust communication mechanism. By directly applying the CCN paradigm in wireless multihop mobile ad hoc networks, we experience various kind of issues such as packet flooding, data redundancy, packet collisions, and retransmissions etc., due to the broadcast nature of the wireless channel. To cope with the problems, in this study, we propose a novel location-aware forwarding and caching scheme for CCN-based mobile ad hoc networks. Extensive simulations are performed by using simulator, named ndnSIM. Experiment results show that proposed scheme does better as compared to other schemes in terms of content retrieval time and the number of Interest retransmissions triggered in the network.

    One problem in the use of wireless Content Centric Networks (CCNs) is the need for substantial overhead to achieve reliability in content delivery due to the requirement for a request packet per each data packet transmission. This paper introduces a novel protocol to reduce overhead and achieve reliability. The protocol allows an interest packet to request multiple data packets and an intermediate node, rather than the provider, to send the data packet. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol improves the performance of wireless CCN.

    Previous researches on ad-hoc networks did not consider the dynamic rate adaptation for wireless multicast. Instead, they statically use the lowest data rate for multicast transmission. The MAC protocol proposed in this paper utilizes the OFDMA mechanism, so that all members can report their rate preference at one time. As a result, the best rate for each member is dynamically selected.

    MIL-STD-188-220 standard specifies protocols for narrowband and voice-based tactical communication devices. However, the future tactical communication devices require broadband services for accurate command and control. In this letter, the enhancement for MIL-STD-188-220-based systems is proposed for use over wideband channels. Unlike the operation defined in the standard, transmissions in Bump-Slots uses P-Persistence method and give the higher p to stations experiencing longer delays. The proposed method is extensively evaluated and the performance enhancements are proved.

    To reduce perforamnce degradations of LR-WPANs due to interference from WLANs, this letter proposes a protocol to allow a piconet to switch an operating channel to an interference-free channel only for transmitting beacon frames. The proposed method does not only increase network performances because of hgh reliability of the beacon frames, but also increase overerall channel utilizations because of using even interfered-channels.

  • Efficient Voice Transmissions for MIL-STD-188-220-Based Wideband Tactical Systems

    Unlike analogue voice signal-oriented and narrowband-based conventional tactical systems, the future tactical networks will deal with packet-based voice traffic over a wide channel bandwidth. In this paper, a method is proposed to improve the performance of voice packet transmission for MIL-STD-188-220 military standard-based wideband communication systems. By utilizing Bump-Slots for voice packet transmissions, significant improvements are achieved. This is confirmed by extensive simulations.

    Information-centric networking (ICN) provides an alternative to the traditional end-to-end communication model of the current Internet architecture by focusing on information dissemination and information retrieval. Named Data Networking (NDN) is one of the candidates that implements the idea of ICN on a practical level. Implementing NDN in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) will bring all the benefits of NDN to WSNs, making them more efficient. By applying the NDN paradigm directly to wireless multi-hop ad-hoc networks, various drawbacks are observed, such as packet flooding due to the broadcast nature of the wireless channel. To cope with these problems, in this paper, we propose an Interest called the accumulation-based forwarding scheme, as well as a novel content store architecture to increase its efficiency in terms of storing and searching data packets. We have performed extensive simulations using the ndnSIM simulator. Experimental results showed that the proposed scheme performs better when compared to another scheme in terms of the total number of Interests, the content store search time, and the network lifetime.

    Content centric networking (CCN) is a newly proposed futuristic Internet paradigm in which communication depends on the decoupling of content names from their locations. In CCN-based multihop wireless ad hoc networks, the participating nodes show dynamic topology, intermittent connectivity, channels fluctuation, and severe constraints such as limited battery power. In the case of traffic congestion, the affected nodes die early owing to the shortage of battery power. Consequently, all pending request entries are also destroyed, which further degrades the network performance as well as the node working lifetime. In this study, we have proposed a novel energy aware transmission scheme in which the forwarding mechanism is based on a node's residual energy. The proposed scheme is evaluated using official ndnSIM. This scheme enhances performance in terms of content retrieval time and total Interest transmission in the network.

    In order to improve multicast performance in wireless networks, we propose two methods for reducing the number of retransmissions and decreasing the backoff duration. Reducing the number of retransmissions is achieved by introducing a target packet delivery ratio. Acknowledgement from a member node initializes the backoff window, which decreases the backoff duration.
