Femtocell is considered a promising solution for indoor service enhancement in IEEE 802.16e cellular systems. However, the scanning scheme of IEEE 802.16e is not suitable for direct use in scanning femtocells in terms of efficiency and scan duration. In this paper, we propose an efficient scanning scheme for femtocells in IEEE 802.16e systems. The proposed scheme can achieve a lower scanning overhead by reducing the number of femtocells needed to be scanned. Numerical results show that the proposed scanning scheme can reduce the control message overhead and the scan duration.
A control frame can be piggybacked onto a data frame to increase channel efficiency in wireless communication. However, if the control frame including global control information is piggybacked, the delay of the data frame from a access point will be increased even though there is only one station with low physical transmission rate. It is similar to the anomaly phenomenon in a network which supports multi-rate transmission. In this letter, we define this phenomenon as "the piggyback problem at low physical transmission rate" and evaluate the effect of this problem with respect to physical transmission rate and normalized traffic load. Then, we propose a delay-based piggyback scheme. Simulations show that the proposed scheme reduces average frame transmission delay and improves channel utilization about 24% and 25%, respectively.

Radio resource is the bottleneck for current multimedia wireless networks. Intelligent traffic control strategies can be enforced to optimize resource allocation so as to enhance network performance. In this study, dynamic control scheme for non-real-time traffic and autonomic control schemes for multimedia traffic are proposed to guarantee the required quality of service (QoS) in the inference-dominated high-speed wireless environment. Both handoff priority and terminal mobility are also taken into consideration. The performance of the state-dependent multidimensional birth-death process is derived by the efficient matrix-analytic methods (MAMs). Compared with the previous results, this paper shows that the proposed control methods can be used for both real-time and non-real-time multimedia traffic in order to meet the required performance without degrading the quality of multimedia services. These results are also important for the design of evolving multimedia wireless systems as well as network optimization.

This letter proposes an efficient uplink scheduling algorithm for the voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) service with variable frame-duration according to the voice activity in IEEE 802.16e/m systems. The proposed algorithm dynamically changes the grant-interval to save the uplink bandwidth, and it uses the random access scheme when the voice activity changes from silent-period to talk-spurt. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm can increase the VoIP capacity by 26 percent compared to the conventional extended real-time polling service (ertPS).
