The proposed scheduling scheme minimizes the mean energy consumption of a real-time parallel task, where the task has the probabilistic computation amount and can be executed concurrently on multiple cores. The scheme determines a pertinent number of cores allocated to the task execution and the instant frequency supplied to the allocated cores. Evaluation shows that the scheme saves manifest amount of the energy consumed by the previous method minimizing the mean energy consumption on a single core.

Power-aware scheduling problem has been a recent issue in cluster systems not only for operational cost due to electricity cost, but also for system reliability. In this paper, we provide SLA-based scheduling algorithms for bag-of-tasks applications with deadline constraints on power-aware cluster systems. The scheduling objective is to minimize power consumption as long as the system provides the service levels of users. A bag-of-tasks application should finish all the sub-tasks before the deadline as the service level. We provide the power-aware scheduling algorithms for both time-shared and space-shared resource sharing policies. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithms reduce much power consumption compared to static voltage schemes.

We propose a polynomial-time algorithm for the scheduling of real-time parallel tasks on multicore processors. The proposed algorithm always finds a feasible schedule using the minimum number of processing cores, where tasks have properties of linear speedup, flexible preemption, arbitrary deadlines and arrivals, and parallelism bound. The time complexity of the proposed algorithm is O(M3log N) for M tasks and N processors in the worst case.

In this paper, we propose a novel Web service composition framework which dynamically accommodates various failure recovery requirements. In the proposed framework called Adaptive Failure-handling Framework (AdaFF), failure-handling submodules are prepared during the design of a composite service, and some of them are systematically selected and automatically combined with the composite Web service at service instantiation in accordance with the requirement of individual users. In contrast, existing frameworks cannot adapt the failure-handling behaviors to user's requirements. AdaFF rapidly delivers a composite service supporting the requirement-matched failure handling without manual development, and contributes to a flexible composite Web service design in that service architects never care about failure handling or variable requirements of users. For proof of concept, we implement a prototype system of the AdaFF, which automatically generates a composite service instance with Web Services Business Process Execution Language (WS-BPEL) according to the users' requirement specified in XML format and executes the generated instance on the ActiveBPEL engine.

Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) protocols based on the store-and-carry principle offer useful functions such as forwarding, utility value, social networks, and network coding. Although many DTN protocol proposals have been offered, work continues to improve performance. In order to implement DTN functions, each protocol introduces multiple parameters; their performance is largely dependent on how the parameter values are set. In this paper, we focus on improving spray and wait (S&W) by proposing a communication protocol named a Spray and AHP-GRA-based Forwarding (S&AGF) and Spray and Fuzzy based Forwarding (S&FF) scheme for DTN. The proposed protocols include a new forwarding scheme intended to extend network lifetime as well as maintain acceptable delivery ratio by addressing a deficiency in existing schemes that do not take energy into consideration. We choose the most suitable relay node by taking the energy, mobility, measured parameters of nodes into account. The simulation-based comparison demonstrates that the proposed S&AGF and S&FF schemes show better balanced performance level in terms of both delivery ratio and network lifetime than original S&W and its variants.

To fully utilize the limited battery energy of mobile electronic devices, we propose an adaptive adjustment method of processing quality for multiple image stream tasks running with widely varying execution times. This adjustment method completes the worst-case executions of the tasks with a given budget of energy, and maximizes the total reward value of processing quality obtained during their executions by exploiting the probability distribution of task execution times. The proposed method derives the maximum reward value for the tasks being executable with arbitrary processing quality, and near maximum value for the tasks being executable with a finite number of processing qualities. Our evaluation on a prototype system shows that the proposed method achieves larger reward values, by up to 57%, than the previous method.

A key issue in QoS-provisioning real-time wireless communications is to provide the QoS requirement with low energy consumption. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient error correction scheme for real-time communications with QoS requirements in wireless networks. The QoS requirement of a message stream is modeled with (m, k) constraint, implying that at least m messages should be sent to a receiver during any window of k periods. The proposed scheme adaptively selects an error correcting code in an energy-efficient manner so that it maximizes the number of QoS provisionings per unit energy consumption.

The proposed scheduling scheme minimizes the mean power consumption of real-time tasks with probabilistic computation amounts while meeting their deadlines. Our study formally solves the minimization problem under finitely discrete clock frequencies with irregular power consumptions, whereas state-of-the-arts studies did under infinitely continuous clock frequencies with regular power consumptions.

The technological development of wireless environment has made real-time multimedia communications possible in wireless networks. Many studies have been done on real-time communications in wireless networks in order to overcome a higher bit error rate in wireless channels. However, none of work deals with firm real-time communications which can be applied to multimedia communications. In this paper, we propose an adaptive error correcting scheme for firm real-time multimedia communications in wireless networks in order to maximize the expected net profit. The proposed scheme adaptively selects an error correcting code under the current air state and the message state of a message stream. Throughout simulation results, we show that the suggested scheme provides more profit than single error-correcting code schemes.

In large-scale collaborative computing, users and resource providers organize various Virtual Organizations (VOs) to share resources and services. A VO organizes other sub-VOs for the purpose of achieving the VO goal, which forms hierarchical VO environments. VO participants agree upon a certain policies, such as resource sharing amount or user accesses. In this letter, we provide an optimal resource sharing mechanism in hierarchical VO environments under resource sharing agreements. The proposed algorithm enhances resource utilization and reduces mean response time of each user.
