Recent work has shown that the usage of multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver in a flat fading environment results in a linear increase in channel capacity. But increasing the number of antennas induces the higher hardware costs and computational burden. To overcome those problems, it is effective to select antennas appropriately among all available ones. In this paper, a new antenna selection method is proposed. The transmit antennas are selected so as to maximize the channel capacity using the genetic algorithm (GA) which is the one of the general random search algorithm. The results show that the proposed GA achieves almost the same performance as the optimal selection method with less computational amount.

The phase and frequency commands of a rotating radar system, that utilizes the frequency scanning and phase shifters to steer the beam in the azimuth and elevation directions, respectively, are derived in terms of the angles of the ground based coordinate system. The frequency equation derived is approximated to a simple form to reduce the calculation time for real time multi-function radar systems. It is shown that the approximate frequency commands are in good agreement with the exact ones if the range of the azimuth scanning is not too wide.

The relationship between the degree of overlap in direct modulation chirp spread spectrum systems with binary phase shift keying and intersymbol interference (ISI) is analyzed. It is observed that the ISI due to overlap fluctuates or monotonically increases as the number of overlaps changes and that, in some cases, the overlap does not incur ISI at all.

Recently, a novel detector was proposed by the authors for code acquisition in non-Gaussian impulsive channels [3], which dramatically outperforms the conventional squared-sum detector; however, it requires exact knowledge of the non-Gaussian noise dispersion. In this paper, a robust detector is proposed, which employs the signs and ranks of the received signal samples, instead of their actual values, and so does not require knowledge of the non-Gaussian noise dispersion. The acquisition performance of the proposed detector is compared with that of the detector of [3] in terms of the mean acquisition time. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is not only robust to deviations from the true value of the non-Gaussian noise dispersion, but also has comparable performance to that of the scheme of [3] using exact knowledge of the non-Gaussian noise dispersion.

Adaptive transmission methods improve the performance of wireless communication system by adjusting parameters like modulation, code-rate, and power depending on the channel state adaptively. In this letter, we consider the adaptive code-rate OFDM system in which code-rate of each subcarrier is adapted optimally. RCPC code is used to obtain different code-rate for each subcarrier. Performance analysis shows that 3-6 dB SNR gain or up to 30-50% data rate increase is achieved at bit error rate 10-6.
Estimation of unknown signal parameters with sensor array measurements has been investigated quite extensively. Also, there has been in recent years an explosive increase in the number of mobile users in wireless cellular systems, thus contributing to growing levels of multi-user interference. To overcome this problem, application of adaptive antenna array techniques to further increase the channel capacity has been discussed. In this paper, a new model of locally scattered signals in the vicinity of mobiles is proposed by defining the mean steering vector and manipulate it mathematically for several distributions. Under this model an estimation method of the direction of arrival is investigated based on a weighted subspace fitting technique. Statistical analysis and simulations are also considered.

If the direction of arrival (DOA) of a source is perturbed due to some reasons in a statistical way as in the environment of wireless mobile communications, a new model appropriate for such environment should be used instead of the point source model. In this paper, an angle-perturbed source model is proposed and an estimation method based on the eigen-decomposition technique is investigated under the model. The asymptotic distribution of the estimation errors is obtained to see the statistical properties.
