FM laser operation of a Ti:sapphire laser is studied experimentally for the first time with an internal phase modulator. We obtained extremely wide FM sidebands of 8 THz width whose phase modulation index was 25,000 rad at a modulation frequency of 160 MHz.

We demonstrate an electrooptic synthesis technique for generating arbitrarily shaped short optical pulses from a CW narrow linewidth laser. For the optical pulse shaping, a large-amplitude electrooptic phase modulator is specially fabricated by employing the quasi-velocity-matching. The phase modulated light having sidebands as wide as 1 THz is separated and phase-only-controlled spatially by a liquid crystal modulator array. After composing the light by using a grating, nearly 1. 2 ps of Fourier-transform-limited optical pulses is obtained.

We report a new type of electrooptic deflector using lens effect which is able to scan a space in two dimensions. The proposed device was developed from a quasi-velocity-matched electrooptic phase modulator with periodic domain inversion, therefore, it can operate efficiently at a microwave frequency. In the experiments, the demonstration of its operation and applications to ultrafast light control was done at 16.25 GHz.
