One of the functions that should be provided in ATM LANs is multicast communication. For multicast communication on ATM LANs, the architecture of switch fabric and protocols for signaling have been studied. However, when data communication using a multicast connection such as LAN emulation service is provided, ABR service on a multicast connection (Multicast ABR) is also required. ABR service has been actively discussed in the ATM forum. Unfortunately, the study on flow control mechanism for Multicast ABR is not enough. This paper discusses the suitable flow control mechanism for Multicast ABR and shows its performance.

Connectionless service for LANs interconnection will be provided in ATM networks at an early stage of B-ISDN era. This service will be provided on connection oriented mode at ATM technology. To perform this service, ATM connections using the dedicated bandwidth for this service are established semi-permanently between the nodes accommodating LANs. On these ATM connections, connectionless service among LANs is provided. It is important for private networks to utilize this bandwidth efficiently for reducing communication cost. In this paper, the architecture to provide connectionless service in private networks is described. Next, the allocation schemes of the bandwidth for this service and their performance are considered. We discuss the following schemes and compare them. One scheme is to establish semi-permanent ATM connections between the nodes with LAN interfaces. The bandwidth for each connection is individually assigned between these nodes. In another scheme, CLSFs (Connection-Less Service Functions) are introduced for connectionless service and connections are established via CLSFs. We show the latter scheme is superior because it brings out the effectiveness of statistical multiplexing of ATM technology and it leads to the reduction of the allocated bandwidth.

In this paper, performance enhancement algorithm in DQDB MAN (Distributed Queue Dual Bus Metropolitan Area Networks) is proposed. DQDB which is standardized by IEEE 802 committee is one of protocols which provide medium access control in metropolitan area networks. In DQDB MAN, a fixed-length slot is a unit for transmission and exchange. Information is transfered by using the slot. The transit delay of the slot has to be small since the slot is not stored in each node. However, the slot having finished information transfer can not be reutilized in downstream nodes. This problem has been discussed by IEEE 802 committee and some societies. This paper proposes new algorithm for improving this point and shows implement scheme to realize it. At first, in this paper, a special node called an erasure node is introduced in a DQDB network and its operation is described. Moreover its implement scheme is shown. In the latter, the performance of this algorithm is evaluated using a queueing model. The result shows the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

This paper describes optical access networks focusing on passive optical network (PON) technologies from a technical point of view. Optical access networks have been applied to fiber-to-the-home as a driving force of broadband services and their use will continue growing in the near future. They will be applied as an aggregate component of broadband wireless networks. This paper also addresses solutions for their application.

Data communication by using TCP/IP is one of important services on ATM networks. At one approach in traffic control of this service, the dedicated bandwidth for data transfer is not guaranteed and the feedback congestion control to prevent cell loss is performed in the congestion case. However, when a large quantity of data is transferred within a short period, this traffic control cannot be expected to achieve high efficiency. In this case, it is suitable that the dedicated bandwidth is guaranteed by FRP (Fast Reservation Protocol) before the data is transferred. This paper describes that FRP is superior to the feedback congestion control for large size data transmission. Next, it proposes a selectable traffic control which selects adaptively one of the feedback congestion control and FRP.
