In this paper, a novel Enhanced Spatial Modulation-based Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (ESM-OTFS) is proposed to maximize the benefits of enhanced spatial modulation (ESM) and orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) transmission. The primary objective of this novel modulation is to enhance transmission reliability, meeting the demanding requirements of high transmission rates and rapid data transfer in future wireless communication systems. The paper initially outlines the system model and specific signal processing techniques employed in ESM-OTFS. Furthermore, a novel detector based on sparse signal estimation is presented specifically for ESM-OTFS. The sparse signal estimation is performed using a fully factorized posterior approximation using Variational Bayesian Inference that leads to a low complexity solution without any matrix inversions. Simulation results indicate that ESM-OTFS surpasses traditional spatial modulation-based OTFS, and the newly introduced detection algorithm outperforms other linear detection methods.

In this paper, we focus on developing efficient multi-configuration selection mechanisms by exploiting the spatial degrees of freedom (DoF), and leveraging the simple design benefits of spatial modulation (SM). Notably, the SM technique, as well as its variants, faces the following critical challenges: (i) the performance degradation and difficulty in improving the system performance for higher-level QAM constellations, and (ii) the vast complexity cost in precoder designs particularly for the increasing system dimension and amplitude-phase modulation (APM) constellation dimension. Given this situation, we first investigate two independent modulation domains, i.e., the original signal- and spatial-constellations. By exploiting the analog shift weighting and the virtual spatial signature technologies, we introduce the signature spatial modulation (SSM) concept, which is capable of guaranteing superior trade-offs among spectral- and cost-efficiencies, and system bit error rate (BER) performance. Besides, we develop an analog beamforming for SSM by solving the introduced unconstrained Lagrange dual function minimization problem. Numerical results manifest the performance gain brought by our developed analog beamforming for SSM.

Sparse orthogonal matrices are proposed to improve the convergence property of expectation propagation (EP) for sparse signal recovery from compressed linear measurements subject to known dense and ill-conditioned multiplicative noise. As a typical problem, this letter addresses generalized spatial modulation (GSM) in over-loaded and spatially correlated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The proposed sparse orthogonal matrices are used in precoding and constructed efficiently via a generalization of the fast Walsh-Hadamard transform. Numerical simulations show that the proposed sparse orthogonal precoding improves the convergence property of EP in over-loaded GSM MIMO systems with known spatially correlated channel matrices.

Joint transmit and receive antenna selection (JTRAS) for transceive spatial modulation (TRSM) is investigated in this paper. A couple of low-complexity and efficient JTRAS algorithms are proposed to improve the reliability of TRSM systems by maximizing the minimum Euclidean distance (ED) among all received signals. Specifically, the QR decomposition based ED-JTRAS achieves near-optimal error performance with a moderate complexity reduction as compared to the optimal ED-JTRAS method. The singular value decomposition based ED-JTRAS achieves sub-optimal error performance with a significant complexity reduction. Simulation results show that the proposed methods remarkably improve the system reliability in both uncorrelated and spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels, as compared to the conventional norm based JTRAS method.

A novel secure spatial modulation (SM) scheme based on dynamic multi-parameter weighted-type fractional Fourier transform (WFRFT), abbreviated as SMW, is proposed. Each legitimate transmitter runs WFRFT on the spatially modulated super symbols before transmit antennas, the parameters of which are dynamically updated using the transmitting bits. Each legitimate receiver runs inverse WFRFT to demodulate the received signals, the parameters of which are also dynamically generated using the recovered bits with the same updating strategies as the transmitter. The dynamic update strategies of WFRFT parameters are designed. As a passive eavesdropper is ignorant of the initial WFRFT parameters and the dynamic update strategies, which are indicated by the transmitted bits, it cannot recover the original information, thereby guaranteeing the communication security between legitimate transmitter and receiver. Besides, we formulate the maximum likelihood (ML) detector and analyze the secrecy capacity and the upper bound of BER. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed SMW scheme can achieve a high level of secrecy capacity and maintain legitimate receiver's low BER performance while deteriorating the eavesdropper's BER.

In this letter, we propose a generalized quadrature spatial modulation technique (GQSM) which offers additional bits per channel use (bpcu) gains and a low complexity greedy detector algorithm, structured orthogonal matching pursuit (S-OMP)- GQSM, based on compressive sensing (CS) framework. Simulation results show that the bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed greedy detector is very close to maximum likelihood (ML) and near optimal detectors based on convex programming.

The conventional generalized spatial modulation (GSM) simultaneously activates multiple transmit antennas in order to improve the spectral efficiency of the original SM. In this letter, to lessen the hardware burden of the multiple RF chains, we provide a new scheme that is designed by combining the GSM scheme using only two active antennas with quaternary quasi-orthogonal sequences of a length of two. Compared with the other SM schemes, the proposed scheme has significant benefits in average error performances and/or their hardware complexities of the RF systems.

The generalized spatial modulation (GSM) is a new transmission technique that can realize high-performance multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems with a low RF complexity. This paper presents an efficient sphere decoding method used to perform the symbol detection for the generalized spatial modulation (GSM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In the proposed method, the cost metric is modified so that it does not include the cancellation of the nonexistent interference. The modified cost metric can be computed by formulating a detection tree that has a regular structure representing the transmit antenna combinations as well as the symbol vectors, both of which are detected efficiently by finding the shortest path on the basis of an efficient tree search algorithm. As the tree search algorithm is performed for the regular detection tree to compute the modified but mathematically-equivalent cost metric, the efficiency of the sphere decoding is improved while the bit-error rate performance is not degraded. The simulation results show that the proposed method reduces the complexity significantly when compared with the previous method: for the 6×6 64QAM GSM-MIMO system with two active antennas, the average reduction rate of the complexity is as high as 45.8% in the count of the numerical operations.

In this paper, we propose a new spatial modulation (SM) scheme based on quaternary quasi-orthogonal sequences (Q-QOSs), referred to as Q-QOS-SM. First, the conventional SM and generalized-SM (GSM) schemes are reinterpreted as a new transmission scheme based on a spatial modulation matrix (SMM), whose column indices are used for the mapping of spatial-information bits unlike the conventional ones. Next, by adopting the SMM comprising the Q-QOSs, the proposed Q-QOS-SM that guarantees twice the number of spatial bits at a transmitter compared with the SM with a constraint of transmit antennas, is designed. From the computer-simulation results, the Q-QOS-SM is shown to achieve a greatly improved throughput compared with the conventional SM and GSM schemes, especially, for a large number of the receive antennas. This finding is mainly because the new scheme offers a much higher minimum Euclidean distance than the other schemes.

Spatial modulation (SM) is introduced into layered space-time coding (L-STC) used in image sensor (IS)-based visible light communication (VLC) systems. STC was basically investigated for extending the communication range of the IS-based VLC link [10], although it is out of the range when IS receivers are at the long distance from the LED array of the transmitter where the number of pixels capturing the transmitter on the image plane is less than the number of LEDs of the array. Furthermore, L-STC was done in [11] for increasing the reception rate with improving the pixel resolution while the receiver was approaching the transmitter. In this paper, SM is combined into L-STC by mapping additional information bits on the location of the pair of STC bit matrices of each layer. Experimental results show that additional SM bits are extracted with no error, without deteriorating the reception quality of and shrinking the transmission range of the original L-STC.

In this paper, we investigate a combination scheme of subcarrier intensity-modulation (SIM) with spatial modulation (SM) for optical wireless communication. Using computer simulation, the performances of the proposed SIM/SM scheme are investigated and compared with those of the conventional SIM scheme in the additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) as well as in outdoor environment with turbulence induced fading characteristics. Numerical results show that the proposed SIM/SM scheme can outperform the conventional SIM in an environment with different spectral efficiencies. When the spectral efficiency is varied from 2bits/s/Hz to 4bits/s/Hz, an Eb/N0 gain of 2dB to 5dB is achieved, when the bit error rate of 10-5 is maintained. It shows that the employment of SM may further improve the power efficiency of SIM, when the number of subcarriers increases according to the spectral efficiency. When the spectral efficiency is 4bits/s/Hz, the SIM/SM scheme for 0.5 of log-irradiance variance in the log-normal turbulence channel shows the same performance as SIM with variance of 0.3. This means that the SIM/SM can be an alternative choice in even worse environments.
