Comparative performance evaluation between parallel combinatory CDMA (PC-CDMA) and Direct Sequence CDMA (DS-CDMA) has been conducted for high speed radio communication up to 2 Mbps under a multipath Rayleigh fading environment. For both DS-CDMA and PC-CDMA, user information rate per code of 128 kbps, convolutional code with 1/2 coding rate, the same bit interleaving and QPSK data modulation are applied to get transmission symbol rate of 128 ksps. The chip rate of 4. 096 Mcps is used to investigate the possibility of 2 Mbps transmission using only 5 MHz bandwidth. So the spreading factor of the spreading code is 32 for DS-CDMA. In PC-CDMA, 128 ksps data stream is divided into four 32 ksps data streams and according to the every four bits pattern, corresponding spreading code of spreading factor of 128 and its polarity are selected out of eight candidate spreading codes. In soft decision Viterbi decoding applied to PC-CDMA, branch metric is calculated for every bit by weighting the output levels of the PC-CDMA correlators for eight candidate spreading codes. By computer simulation under vehicular environment model with six multipaths, it has been shown that PC-CDMA can offer more capacity approximately by double than DS-CDMA for both downlink and uplink under the condition such as for vehicular for BER of 10-3, and 2 Mbps transmission per cell for downlink is possible not only in isolated cell condition but also in omni cell condition by PC-CDMA.

This study introduces large-scale field experiments of VoiceTra, which is the world's first speech-to-speech multilingual translation application for smart phones. In the study, approximately 10 million input utterances were collected since the experiments commenced. The usage of collected data was analyzed and discussed. The study has several important contributions. First, it explains system configuration, communication protocol between clients and servers, and details of multilingual automatic speech recognition, multilingual machine translation, and multilingual speech synthesis subsystems. Second, it demonstrates the effects of mid-term system updates using collected data to improve an acoustic model, a language model, and a dictionary. Third, it analyzes system usage.

We previously proposed a next generation cellular system for IMT-2000 based on the Wideband DS-CDMA with TDD scheme (W-CDMA/TDD) and have evaluated its performance by computer simulation, laboratory and field experiment. With the W-CDMA/TDD, because of its correlation between the downlink and the uplink, transmission and reception space diversity (SD) at a base station and open-loop transmit power control (TPC) can be simply realized. This paper reports performance of laboratory and field experiments using a developed testbed. The results shows it has been confirmed that transmission and reception SD and open-loop TPC have sufficient performance under a field environment as well as laboratory environment.

The operation of a polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensator using a polarizer and a Faraday rotator-based polarization controller (FRPC) is analyzed in detail, and the compensation performance is experimentally evaluated in 40 Gbit/s operation. The evaluation results show that a wide range of differential group delay over a bit period can almost be completely compensated using the PMD compensator. The characteristics of electrical spectrum-based signal monitoring methods are investigated in detail, and the results shows advantages of a low frequency band monitoring method that produces about double the wider dynamic range than a fundamental repetition frequency monitoring method. The automated PMD compensator using a polarizer and a FRPC driven by the low frequency band monitoring method is experimentally investigated using a terrestrial 40 Gbit/s wavelength division multiplexing system involving 350-km installed single-mode fibers. The PMD compensator produces highly stable signal performance in the field environment for a long term and reduces the standard deviation of the Q-factor distribution.

Various network services, such as virtual private network, cloud computing and Internet protocol television, are often provided across multiple network operators. The difficulty in managing the quality of service across multiple operator domains is the barrier to adoption especially to service level agreement-sensitive and mission critical cases. Federating network resources among operators is necessary to manage the quality of service across operators. To manage network resources of other operator domains, the network operator's federation mechanisms aiming at a future open access network model are essential. In this paper, the mechanisms of the signaling process as well as the capability of the bandwidth broker are proposed for open access networking, where multiple operators are connected via a common access network operator. Considering that both the next generation network and the non-next generation network architectures must coexist, we have analyzed federation mechanisms for establishing practical functional extensions to existing bandwidth broker implementations for the federation signaling. Based on the analysis, the designs of the federation signaling and the required bandwidth broker functional models are proposed. The proposed design is prototyped and the demonstration of the federation signaling shows that the federation mechanism can assure the bandwidth of a targeted live data stream on demand across the trunk and the access network operators even under a congested situation.

We propose a cell library development methodology for throughput enhancement of character projection equipment. First, an ILP (Integer Linear Programming)-based cell selection is proposed for the equipment for which both of the CP (Character Projection) and VSB (Variable Shaped Beam) methods are available, in order to minimize the number of electron beam (EB) shots, that is, time to fabricate chips. Secondly, the influence of cell directions on area and delay time of chips is examined. The examination helps to reduce the number of EB shots with a little deterioration of area and delay time because unnecessary directions of cells can be removed. Finally, a case study is shown in which the numbers of EB shots are shown for several cases.

Platforms of hosting services are expected to provide a virtual private computing infrastructure with guaranteed levels of performance to support each reservation request sent by a client. To enhance the performance of the computing infrastructure in responding to reservation requests, the platforms are required to reserve, coordinate, and control globally distributed computing and network resources across multiple domains. This paper proposes Grid Network Service -- Web Services Interface version 2 (GNS-WSI2). GNS-WSI2 is a resource-reservation messaging protocol that establishes a client-server relationship. A server is a kind of management system in the management plane, and it allocates available network resources within its own domain in response to each reservation request from a client. GNS-WSI2 has the ability to reserve network resources rapidly and reliably over multiple network domains. This paper also presents the results of feasibility tests on a transpacific testbed that validate GNS-WSI2 in terms of the scalable reservation of network resources over multiple network domains. In the tests, two computing infrastructures over multiple network domains are dynamically provided for scientific computing and remote-visualization applications. The applications are successfully executed on the provided infrastructures.

Ge surfaces were irradiated by Ar+ ions at 600 eV with and without simultaneous supply of Ge or Al at room temperature. The surfaces ion-irradiated without any simultaneous metal supply were characterized by densely distributed conical protrusions. By contrast, various kinds of nanostructures were formed on the Ge surfaces ion-irradiated with a simultaneous metal supply. They featured cones and nanobelts with a flattened top for Ge supply cases, whereas they were characterized by the nanorods, nanobelts and nanowalls for Al supply cases. Very interestingly, most of the nanorods and nanobelts formed with an Al supply possessed a bottleneck structure. Thus, the Ge nanostructures were controllable in morphology by species and amount of simultaneously supplied metals.

We have developed a high-speed electroabsorption modulator integrated distributed feedback (EA/DFB) lasers. Transmission performance over 10 km was investigated under 25 Gbps and 43 Gbps modulation. In addition, the feasibility of wide temperature range operation was also investigated. An uncooled EA/DFB laser can contribute to the realization of low-power-consumption, small-footprint and cost-effective transceiver module. In this study, we used the temperature-tolerant InGaAlAs materials in an EA modulator. A wide temperature ranged 12 km transmission with over 9.6 dB dynamic extinction ratio was demonstrated under 25 Gbps modulation. A 43 Gbps 10 km transmission was also demonstrated. The laser achieved a clear, opened eye diagram with a dynamic extinction ratio over 7 dB from 25 to 85. The modulated output power was more than +2.9 dBm even at 85. These devices are suitable for next-generation, high-speed network systems, such as 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps Ethernet.

We previously proposed a next generation cellular system for IMT-2000 based on wideband DS-CDMA with TDD scheme and have evaluated its performance by computer simulation, laboratory and field experiments. This paper presents the design concept of TDD-mode operation on wideband DS-CDMA systems. These systems employ almost the same techniques with a little difference as FDD-mode. We also present the schemes of the TDD-mode specific techniques such as fast cell search, transmission diversity and transmitter power control and show the evaluation results of them are effective. Performance can be improved by use of enhanced techniques such as interference cancellation and adaptive antenna array diversity.

Hybrid vehicles (HVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) have become widespread. These vehicles incorporate a large number of electronic devices, which requires the use of a high-voltage (200 V) battery. Power electronics devices driven by the 200 V battery is expected to increase in the future. As such, we herein propose a power line communication (PLC) method that uses a high-voltage power line. In the present paper, we first clarify the transmission channel through modeling of an equivalent circuit and channel measurement. We then conduct noise measurements and determine the noise characteristics of the proposed PLC. Finally, we evaluate the bit error rate performance through computer simulations based on the measured transmission channel and noise.

Implementation issues on generalized multi-protocol label switching (GMPLS) -based photonic switching networks are experimentally analyzed. A resilient control plane architecture using in-fiber and out-of-fiber control channels is proposed to resolve issues of establishing the control plane in out-of-band networks. The resilient control plane is demonstrated in a photonic cross-connect (PXC) -based GMPLS network involving a 1,000 km transmission line. Fast signaling for provisioning and restoration operation is accomplished by implementing in-fiber control channels as primary, and the out-of-fiber control channels effectively operate as secondary and restore messaging of the control information between neighbors. The control channel protection is initiated by the link management protocol (LMP). Using the test bed, optical layer routing operation is investigated to assess the effects on the signal quality of wavelength paths, and transparent routing of the wavelength paths over one-hop and two-hops route is demonstrated within 1 dB difference regarding the Q factor. Stable operation of loss of light (LOL) -triggered restoration is demonstrated by setting the optical level threshold 5 dB higher than the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise level.

Car navigation systems provide traffic jam information. In this study, we attempt to provide more detailed traffic jam information that considers the lane in which a traffic jam is in. This makes it possible for users to avoid long waits in queued traffic going toward an unintended destination. Lane-specific traffic jam detection utilizes image processing, which incurs long processing time and high cost. To reduce these, we propose a “suddenness index (SI)” to categorize candidate areas as sudden or periodic. Sudden traffic jams are prioritized as they may lead to accidents. This technology aggregates the number of connected cars for each mesh on a map and quantifies the degree of deviation from the ordinary state. In this paper, we evaluate the proposed method using actual global positioning system (GPS) data and found that the proposed index can cover 100% of sudden lane-specific traffic jams while excluding 82.2% of traffic jam candidates. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of time savings by integrating the proposed method into a demonstration framework. In addition, we improved the proposed method's ability to automatically determine the SI threshold to select the appropriate traffic jam candidates to avoid manual parameter settings.
