This paper presents an overview of the advance of the China millimeter-wave multiple gigabit (CMMG) wireless local area network (WLAN) system which operates in the 45 GHz frequency band. The CMMG WLAN system adopts the multiple antennas technologies to support data rate up to 15Gbps. During the progress of CMMG WLAN standardization, some new key technologies were introduced to adapt the millimeter-wave characteristic, including the usage of the zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence, a novel lower density parity check code (LDPC)-based packet encoding, and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) single carrier transmission. Extensive numerical results and system prototype test are also given to validate the performance of the technologies adopted by CMMG WLAN system.

In this letter, an improved channel estimator for MIMO-SCBT systems is proposed. Pilot blocks are constructed using quadriphase complementary sequences (QCSs) which enable both one-sided (OSD) and two-sided (TSD) channel estimation (CE). And OSD-CE and TSD-CE are combined to provide improved performance in frequency-selective fast and slow fading channels and to maintain low-complexity implementations. Simulation results demonstrate the performance merits of the proposed scheme.

A 2.5 GHz 8-phase phase-locked loop (PLL) is proposed for 10-Gbps system on chip (SoC) transmission links application. The proposed PLL has several features which use new design techniques. The first one is a new variable delay cell (VDC) for the voltage control oscillator (VCO). Its advantages over the conventional delay cell are: wide-range output frequency and low noise sensitivity with low KVCO. The second feature is that, the PLL consists of a self-calibration circuit (SCC) which protects the PLL from variations in the process, voltage and temperature (PVT). The third feature is that, the proposed PLL has an 8-phase output frequency and also for avoiding the power/ground (P/G) effect and the substrate noise effect on the PLL, it also has a low jitter output frequency. The PLL is implemented in 0.13-µm CMOS technology. The PLL output jitter is 2.83 ps (rms) less than 0.7% of the output period. The total power dissipation is 21 mW at 2.5 GHz output frequency, and the core area is 0.08 mm2.

In our previous project, an XML-based authoring tool was provided for teachers to script multimedia teaching material with animated agents, and a stand-alone learning system was designed for students to display the material and interact with animated agents. We also provided evidence that the authoring tool and learning system in computer-assisted learning systems successfully enhances learning performance. The aim of this study is to continue the previous project, to develop a Web-based multimedia learning system that presents materials and an animated agent on a Web browser. The Web-based multimedia learning system can provide an opportunity for students to engage in independent learning or review of school course work. In order to demonstrate the efficiency of this learning system, it was applied to one elementary school. An experimental material, `Road Traffic Safety', was presented in two learning systems: a Web-based PowerPoint learning system and a Web-based multimedia learning system. The experiment was carried out in two classes that had a total of thirty-one 3rd-grade students. The results suggest that using our authoring tool in a Web-based learning system can improve learning, and in particular, enhance learners' problem-solving ability. Students with higher achievement on the post-test showed better comprehension in problem-solving questions. Furthermore, the feedback from the questionnaire surveys show students' learning interest can be fostered when an animated agent is integrated into multimedia teaching materials, and that students prefer to adopt the Web-based multimedia learning system for independent learning after school.

The capacity maximization of line-of-sight (LoS) two-input and multiple-output (TIMO) channels in indoor environments is investigated in this paper. The 3×2 TIMO channel is mainly studied. First, the capacity fluctuation number (CFN) which reflects the variation of channel capacity is proposed. Then, the expression of the average capacity against the CFN is derived. The CFN is used as a criterion for optimization of the capacity by changing inter-element spacings of transmit and receive antenna arrays. Next, the capacity sensitivity of the 3×2 TIMO channel to the orientation and the frequency variation is studied and compared with those of 2×2 and 4×2 TIMO channels. A small capacity sensitivity of the 3×2 TIMO channel is achieved and verified by both simulation and measurement results. Furthermore, the CFN can also be used as a criterion for optimization of average capacity and the proposed optimization method is validated through numerical results.

In this paper, the research advances in silicon based millimeter wave and THz ICs in the State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves is reviewed, which consists of millimeter wave amplifiers, mixers, oscillators at Q, V and W and D band based on CMOS technology, and several research approaches of THz passive ICs including cavity and filter structures using SIW-like (Substrate Integrated Waveguide-like) guided wave structures based on CMOS and MEMs process. The design and performance of these components and devices are presented.
In this paper, millimeter wave (mmWave) filtenna arrays for 5G applications are proposed. Two kinds of 2-element subarrays are designed for horizontal and vertical polarizations. Each subarray consists of three substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavities and two sets of stacked patches. Fully-shielded combined eighth-mode SIW (FSD-CEMSIW) cavities are used in the filtenna design. This cavity not only works as the first-stage resonator but also as the power divider for the subarray. As a result, a four-order bandpass filtering response is achieved. Filtenna arrays were fabricated and measured for demonstration. The impedance bandwidths of these subarrays cover 24-30GHz, including the 5G mmWave bands (n257, n258, and n261) with measured average gains of 8.2dBi and more than 22dB out-of-band suppression. The proposed antennas can be good candidates for 5G mmWave communication to reduce the system complexity and potential cost of the mmWave front-ends.
