  • Acquiring 4D Light Fields of Self-Luminous Extended Light Sources Using Programmable Filter

    Self-luminous light sources in the real world often have nonnegligible sizes and radiate light inhomogeneously. Acquiring the model of such a light source is highly important for accurate image synthesis and understanding. In this paper, we propose an approach to measuring 4D light fields of self-luminous extended light sources by using a liquid crystal (LC) panel, i.e. a programmable optical filter and a diffuse-reflection board. The proposed approach recovers the 4D light field from the images of the board illuminated by the light radiated from a light source and passing through the LC panel. We make use of the feature that the transmittance of the LC panel can be controlled both spatially and temporally. The approach enables multiplexed sensing and adaptive sensing, and therefore is able to acquire 4D light fields more efficiently and densely than the straightforward method. We implemented the prototype setup, and confirmed through a number of experiments that our approach is effective for modeling self-luminous extended light sources in the real world.

  • Adaptive Sensing Period Based Distributed Medium Access Control for Cognitive Radio Networks

    In this paper, we propose distributed medium access control (MAC) protocols based on an adaptive sensing period adjustment scheme for low-cost multiple secondary users in interweave-type cognitive radio (CR) networks. The proposed MAC protocols adjust the sensing period of each secondary user based on both primary sensing and secondary data channels in distributed manner. Then, the secondary user with the shortest sensing period accesses the medium using request-to-send (RTS) and clear-to-send (CTS) message exchange. Three components affect the length of each user's sensing period: sensing channel quality from the primary system, data channel quality to the secondary receiver, and collision probability among multiple secondary transmitters. We propose two sensing period adjustment (SPA) schemes to efficiently improve achievable rate considering the three components, which are logarithmic SPA (LSPA) and exponential SPA (ESPA). We evaluate the performance of the proposed schemes in terms of the achievable rate and other factors affecting it, such as collision probability, false alarm probability, and average sensing period.

    In this letter, we propose an adaptive sensing/transmission scheduling policy in which the secondary user senses the spectrum when its channel condition is poor for transmission. The adaptive sensing/transmission scheduling is modeled as a Markov process and a near-optimal algorithm is proposed to determine the sensing/transmission policy. Simulation results verify our analysis and demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm.

  • A Motion/Shape Estimation of Multiple Objects Using an Advanced Contour Matching Technique

    An approach to estimate the information of moving objects is described in terms of their kinetic and static properties such as 2D velocity, acceleration, position, and the size of each object for the features of motion snd shape. To obtain the information of motion/shape of multiple objects, an advanced contour matching scheme is developed, which includes the synthesis of edge images and the analysis of object shape with a high matching confidence as well as a low computation cost. The scheme is composed of three algorithms: a motion estimation by an iterative triple cross-correlation, an image synthesis by shifting and masking the object, and a shape analysis for determining the object size. Implementing fuzzy membership functions to the object shape, the scheme gets improved in accuracy of capturing motion and shape of multiple moving objects. Experimental result shows that the proposed method is valid for several walking men in real scene.

  • An Adaptive Sensing System with Tracking and Zooming a Moving Object

    This paper describes an adaptive sensing system with tracking and zooming a moving object in the stable environment. Both the close contour matching technique and the effective determination of zoom ratio by fuzzy control are proposed for achieving the sensing system. First, the estimation of object feature parameters, 2-dimensional velocity and size, is based on close contour matching. The correspondence problem is solved with cross-correlation in projections extracted from object contours in the specialized difference images. In the stable environment, these contours matching, capable of eliminating occluded contours or random noises as well as background, works well without heavy-cost optical flow calculation. Next, in order to zoom the tracked object in accordance with the state of its shape or movement practically, fuzzy control is approached first. Three sets of input membership function--the confidence of object shape, the variance of object velocity, and the object size--are evaluated with the simplified implementation. The optimal focal length is achieved of not only desired size but safe tracking in combination with fuzzy rule matrix constituted of membership functions. Experimental results show that the proposed system is robust and valid for numerous kind of moving object in real scene with system period 1.85 sec.
