  • MMSE Mobile Station Positioning Method Using Signal Strength in Cellular Systems

    A mobile station (MS) positioning method using signal strength is an algorithm to estimate the geographical position of a target MS based on measured strength of signals transmitted to/from the MS from/to multiple base stations (BSs) at known geographical positions. This paper proposes a novel MS positioning method using signal strength in cellular systems. The primary sources of position location error for positioning methods using signal strength are multipath fading and shadowing. Although signal strength averaging can help to reduce the effect of multipath fading, the effect of shadowing still remains. In order to eliminate the error caused by shadowing, the proposed method applies a statistical approach and a minimum mean squared error (MMSE) criterion to determine a position estimate. The performance of the proposed method is compared to that of a maximum likelihood (ML) positioning method and a cell-site positioning method. The performance is obtained by computer simulations and field experiments. A computer simulation result shows that the proposed method can determine position estimates in higher probability than the ML method. Also, it is shown that the proposed method provides higher accuracy than the ML method and the cell-site method.

    Since the penetration of VSAT services is rapidly increasing, more earth stations will operate around airports than is currently true. This makes it essential to evaluate accurately and efficiently the impairment of received signals due to blockage by aircraft. This paper proposes developing an aircraft model using a thin, planar polygon to represent the aircraft projection and to apply GTD with corner diffraction terms. The effectiveness and applicability of the method is then examined numerically. It is demonstrated that the results measured in the Ku-band around two airports are a good match with the numerical simulations even when the distance between the aircraft and the stations is small.

  • An Initial Code Acquisition Scheme for Indoor Packet DS/SS Systems with Macro/Micro Antenna Diversity

    In this paper, we study macro/micro diversity techniques for code acquisition of a direct-sequence spread-spectrum signal in an indoor packet communication system. In the system discussed, the base station has several radio ports each with a cluster of antennas, and the terminal also has multiple antennas. The performance in the uplink of this system is analyzed under Lognormal shadowing and flat Rayleigh fading. The numerical results show great performance improvements by proposed diversity techniques. In addition, it is clarified that the mean acquisition time, which is often used as the measure of performance, is not suitable for packet radio systems as it underestimates the necessary preamble length for initial code acquisition.

    In recent years, several global network systems using non-stationary satellites have been proposed. Some of them are announced to start services within years. We also have several experimental systems with stratospheric aircrafts. In the future, the radio communication system using stratospheric aircrafts will be one of the promising media for personal communications. The question of how to establish the optimal communication under such circumstance seems to be still open. In this paper, performance evaluations of wireless communication systems using LEO satellites and stratospheric aircrafts are proposed. We will show some proper communication parameters to improve competence of mobile communication in the such systems as well.

  • Outage Probability Analysis for Cellular Mobile Radio Systems Subject to Nakagami Fading and Shadowing

    Empirical studies confirm that the received radio signals in certain cellular systems are well modelled by Nakagami statistics. Therefore, performing relevant systems studies can be potentially useful to a system designer. A very useful statistical measure for characterizing the performance of a mobile radio system is the probability of outage, which describes the fraction of time that the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) drops below some threshold. A more refined criterion for the outage is the failure to simultaneously obtain a sufficient SIR and a minimum power level for the desired signal. Thus, we derive new expressions for the probability of outage where a mobile unit receives a Nakagami desired signal and multiple, independent, cochannel Nakagami interferers. A salient feature of our results is that, unlike some previous studies, the outage expressions do not restrict the Nakagami fading parameter, m, to strictly integer values. Furthermore, since the received signals in mobile radio also experience log-normal shadowing, we analyze the case where the received signals are modelled by a composite of Nakagami and log-normal distributions. Outage probabilities are computed and graphically presented for several cases. The effect of specifying a minimum signal requirement for adequate reception is found to introduce a floor on the outage probability. It is also found that shadowing in macrocellular systems severely degrades the desired quality of service by increasing the reuse distance necessary for a given outage level.
