  • A Design of Low Latency Random Access Preamble Detector for LTE Uplink Receiver

    This paper presents a hardware design of high throughput, low latency preamble detector for 3GPP LTE physical random access channel (PRACH) receiver. The presented PRACH receiver uses the pipelined structure to improve the throughput of power delay profile (PDP) generation which is executed multiple times during the preamble detection. In addition, to reduce detection latency, we propose an instantaneous preamble detection method for both restricted and unrestricted set. The proposed preamble detection method can detect all existing preambles directly and instantaneously from PDP output while conducting PDP combining for restricted set. The PDP combining enables the PRACH receiver to detect preambles robustly even in severe Doppler effect or frequency error exist. Using proposed method, the worst case preamble detection latency time can be less than 1 ms with 136 MHz clock and the proposed PRACH receiver can be implemented with approximately 237k equivalent ASIC gates count or occupying 30.2% of xc6vlx130t FPGA device.

  • Low Complexity Fano-Based Detection Algorithm with Iterative Structure for V-BLAST Systems

    We present a computationally efficient Fano detection algorithm with an iterative structure for V-BLAST systems. As our previous work, we introduced a Fano-based sequential detection scheme with three interrelated steps whose computational loads are excessive. To deal with the computational inefficiency, the proposed algorithm is redesigned by the addition of two steps: preparation and iterative tree searching. In particular, it employs an early stop technique to avoid the unnecessary iteration or to stop the needless searching process of the algorithm. Computer simulation shows that the proposed scheme yields significant saving in complexity with very small performance degradation, compared with sphere detection (SD).

    This letter proposes an efficient transmit power allocation using partial channel information feedback for the closed-loop sorted QR decomposition (SQRD) based V-BLAST systems. For the feedback information, the positive real-valued diagonal elements of R are forwarded to the transmitter. With the proposed transmit power allocation that is numerically derived by the Lagrange optimization method, the bit error rate performance of the system can be remarkably improved compare to the conventional open-loop SQRD based V-BLAST systems without increasing the receiver complexity.

    The public safety spectrum is generally under-utilized due to the unique traffic characteristics of bursty and mission critical. This letter considers the application of dynamic spectrum access (DSA) to the combined spectrum of public safety (PS) and commercial (CMR) users in a common shared network that can provide both PS and CMR services. Our scenario includes the 700 MHz Public/Private Partnership which was recently issued by the Federal Communications Commission. We first propose an efficient DSA mechanism to coordinate the combined spectrum, and then establish a call admission control that reflects the proposed DSA in a wideband code division multiple access based network. The essentials of our proposed DSA are opportunistic access to the public safety spectrum and priority access to the commercial spectrum. Simulation results show that these schemes are well harmonized in various network environments.

    We propose a new stopping criterion for decoding LDPC codes which consists of a measure of decoder behaviors and a decision rule to predict decoding failure. We will show that the proposed measure, the number of satisfied check nodes, does not need (or minimizes) additional complexity, and the decision rule is efficient and more importantly channel independent, which was not possible in the previous work.

  • A Novel Transmit Scheme in CDM-Based MIMO Channel Sounding Systems

    The code division multiplexing (CDM)-based MIMO channel sounder architecture is efficient at measuring fast fading MIMO channels. This paper examines loosely synchronous (LS), CAZAC, Kasami, and Chaotic sequences as probing signals in the CDM architecture. After comparing the performance of the channel measurement among the sequences, it is concluded that the LS sequences are the most appropriate codes for the probing signals. However, because LS sequences have a significant drawback in that the number of transmit antennas is limited to less than 4, we propose using a hybrid architecture combining CDM with TDM for supporting a greater number of transmit antennas. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can improve the measurement performance when more than 4 transmit antennas are used.
