The transient spectral spread of directly modulated DFB LD's, which appears in the time-resolved chirping measurement, is studied experimentally and numerically. Such a phenomenon has been already reported as a side mode oscillation called "subpeak", but there has been little argument as to the physical origin. We make it clear that the subpeak is a spurious mode due to the influence of the photodetector bandwidth. The minimum photodetector bandwidth which is necessary in the time-resolved chirping measurement is examined. Furthermore the distortion of the long-distance transmitted waveform is also explained by one mode oscillation.

An application of wavelength conversion laser diodes (WCLDs) to a photonic cross-connect system using wavelength-division (WD) technology is presented. We propose a novel WD photonic cross-connect node architecture with multiwavelength selective filters. By using the filters, we can construct a nonblocking cross-connect switch by 2-stage connection. Next we describe the requirements to the optical devices in our switch, especially to the wavelength conversion devices in configuring a multistage connection of our switch. Finally, we have conducted the wavelength switching experiments using our wavelength conversion laser diode at a bit rate of 125Mb/s and shown its applicability to a WD photonic cross-connect system with over 3,000 channels.

The mode partition noise of 1.3µm distributed feedback laser diodes (DFB LD's), which is induced by the externally reflected light, is studied experimentally and numerically. The mode partition noise is evaluated by the k-value. It is observed that the mode parition noise monotonically increases with the DC bias current when the reflected light affects DFB LD's and the DC bias current is above the threshold current. From the dependence of the k-value on the external power reflection coefficient, it is observed that the k-value dramatically increases when the external power reflection coefficient is above a value which differs from LD to LD. This is closely related to the fact that the tolerance to the externally reflected light depends on the threshold gain difference between the main mode and the dominant side mode.

We studied a silicon (Si) waveguide using ferro-electric liquid crystal (FLC) cladding for various applications in optical networks. The FLCs in the cladding layer change their effective refractive index corresponding to the applied voltage polarity, and give a phase shift to the traveling lightwave in the waveguides. The phase change coefficients of three-layer slab waveguides with FLC/Si/SiO2 structure were calculated. We observed an amplitude change in the output light of an experimental modulator consisting of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with FLC-cladding Si-rib waveguides on a silicon-on-insulator wafer, and evaluated the phase shift at a wavelength of 1550 nm. We propose optical switching devices using Si-rib waveguide Mach-Zehnder interferometers having FLC cladding. Switching of experimental devices operating at 1550 nm wavelength was demonstrated.
