  • QoE Enhancement of Audio-Video Reliable Groupcast with IEEE 802.11aa

    This paper enhances the QoE of audio and video multicast transmission over a wireless LAN by means of reliable groupcast schemes. We use GCR (GroupCast with Retries) Unsolicited Retry and GCR Block ACK as reliable groupcast schemes; they are standardized by IEEE 802.11aa. We assume that a wireless access point transmits audio and video streams to several terminals connected to the access point by groupcast. We compare three schemes: Groupcast with EDCA (Enhanced Distributed Channel Access), GCR Unsolicited Retry and GCR Block ACK. We perform computer simulations under various network conditions to assess application-level QoS and evaluate QoE by a subjective experiment. As a result, we find that the most effective scheme depends on network conditions.

  • The Effectiveness of Adaptive Capacity Allocation on QoE of Audio-Video IP Transmission over the IEEE 802.16 BE Service

    This paper deals with two types of capacity allocation schemes, i.e., static and adaptive, for uplink and downlink burst durations in the IEEE 802.16 BE (Best Effort) service. We study QoE (Quality of Experience) enhancement of audio-video IP transmission over the uplink channel with the two capacity allocation schemes. We introduce a piggyback request mechanism for uplink bandwidth requests from subscriber stations to the base station in addition to a random access-based request mechanism. We assess QoE of audio-video streams for four schemes obtained from the combination of the capacity allocation schemes and the bandwidth request mechanisms. We also employ two types of audio-video contents. From the assessment result, we notice that the adaptive allocation scheme is effective for QoE enhancement particularly under heavily loaded conditions because of its efficient usage of OFDM symbols. In addition, the piggyback request mechanism can enhance QoE of audio-video transmission. We also find that the effects of capacity allocation schemes and piggyback request mechanism on QoE change according to the content types.

    In this paper, we propose a framework for the real-time estimation of a multidimensional QoE of Multi-View Video and Audio (MVV-A) IP transmission. The framework utilizes linear multiple regression analysis with application-level and transport-level QoS parameters which can be measured in real time. In order to cope with a variety of MVV-A usage-situations, we introduce the concept of usage-situation type for grouping usage-situations with similar features to apply a representative regression line. We deal with two contents, two camera arrangements, and two user interfaces for viewpoint change as representative examples of the usage-situations. We assess multidimensional QoE of MVV-A with various types of average load, playout buffering time, and delay in the network. We then conduct the multiple regression analysis for the multidimensional QoE values represented by a psychological scale. From the comparison of measured values and estimated ones, we notice that real-time estimation of QoE is feasible in MVV-A IP transmission.

  • Enhancement of Video Streaming QoE by Considering Burst Loss in Wireless LANs

    In order to enhance QoE of audio and video IP transmission, this paper proposes a method for mitigating the spatial quality impairment during burst loss periods over the wireless networks in the video output scheme SCS, which is a QoE-based video output scheme. SCS switches between two common video output schemes: frame skipping and error concealment. The proposed method pauses video output with an undamaged frame during the burst loss period in order not to pause video output on a degraded frame. We perform an experiment with constant thresholds, the table-lookup method, and the proposed method under various network conditions. The result shows that the effect of the proposed method on QoE can differ with the contents and GOP structures.

  • User-Assisted QoS Control for QoE Enhancement in Audiovisual and Haptic Interactive IP Communications

    In this paper, we propose a user-assisted QoS control scheme that utilizes media adaptive buffering to enhance QoE of audiovisual and haptic IP communications. The scheme consists of two modes: a manual mode and an automatic mode. It enables users to switch between these two modes according to their inclinations. We compare four QoS control schemes: the manual mode only, the automatic mode only, the switching scheme starting with the manual mode, and the switching scheme starting with the automatic mode. We assess the effects of the four schemes, user attributes, and tasks on QoE through a subjective experiment which provides information on users' behavior in addition to QoE scores. As a result of the experiment, we show that the user-assisted QoS control scheme can enhance QoE. Furthermore, we notice that the proper QoS control scheme depends on user attributes and tasks.

  • An Audio-Video Multipath Streaming Scheme for Ad Hoc Networks: The Effect of Node Mobility

    This letter studies the effect of node mobility on application-level QoS of audio-video multipath streams in wireless ad hoc networks. The audio-video streams are transmitted with the MultiPath streaming scheme with Media Synchronization control (MPMS), which was previously proposed by the authors. We perform computer simulation with a grid topology network of IEEE 802.11b including two mobile nodes. The simulation results show that MPMS is effective in achieving high application-level QoS in mobile networks as well.

    In this paper, we discuss QoE (Quality of Experience) requirements for MVV (Multi-View Video) and audio transmission over IP networks and study the effect of the playout buffering time, contents and viewpoint change interfaces on the QoE and user's behavior. Unlike previous works, which mainly discuss MVV transmission from aspects of video codecs, we study MVV and audio transmission under various IP traffic and delay conditions by experiment. We compare two schemes: a scheme that the user watches from a single viewpoint and the one that he/she can choose one viewpoint from many ones. As a result, we show that the users prefer the scheme where they can choose one viewpoint from many ones. We have found that when using proper buffering time, the users feel faster viewpoint changes; it improves their satisfaction compared to that when they watch on a single viewpoint. We have also noticed that the user pays more attention to the degradation of the video when watching on a single viewpoint. We have observed that the users tend to change the viewpoint more frequently in light traffic and low delay.

  • Effectiveness of a Hybrid Method of Block Ack and Unsolicited Retry on Binary Data Lossless Groupcast over Wireless LANs

    In this paper, we propose a combined method of GCR Block Ack and Unsolicited Retry for binary data lossless groupcast over wireless LANs. The two mechanisms are standardized as IEEE 802.11aa GCR for audiovisual transmission. In the proposed method, the sender transmits each frame twice without acknowledgment as Unsolicited Retry under lossy wireless link conditions. After transmitting twice, the sender enters the Block Ack sequence. In addition, we apply TXOP-Bursting, which allows a terminal to send frames sequentially with high priority during the TXOP limit, to the combined method. To show the proposal's effectiveness, we carry out a computer simulation. We assume binary data transmission of about 40MB and assess the time of complete reception at all the receivers. From the result, we find that the proposed method can shorten the received time against the conventional Block Ack method.

  • Application-Level and User-Level QoS Assessment of Audio-Video IP Transmission over Cross-Layer Designed Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

    This paper performs application-level QoS and user-level QoS assessment of audio-video streaming in cross-layer designed wireless ad hoc networks. In order to achieve high QoS at the user-level, we employ link quality-based routing in the network layer and media synchronization control in the application layer. We adopt three link quality-based routing protocols: OLSR-SS (Signal Strength), AODV-SS, and LQHR (Link Quality-Based Hybrid Routing). OLSR-SS is a proactive routing protocol, while AODV-SS is a reactive one. LQHR is a hybrid protocol, which is a combination of proactive and reactive routing protocols. For application-level QoS assessment, we performed computer simulation with ns-2 where an IEEE 802.11b mesh topology network with 24 nodes was assumed. We also assessed user-level QoS by a subjective experiment with 30 assessors. From the assessment results, we find AODV-SS the best for networks with long inter-node distances, while LQHR outperforms AODV-SS for short inter-node distances. In addition, we also examine characteristics of the three schemes with respect to the application-level QoS in random topology networks.

    This paper presents an application-level QoS comparison of three inter-destination synchronization schemes: the master-slave destination scheme, the synchronization maestro scheme, and the distributed control scheme. The inter-destination synchronization adjusts the output timing among destinations in a multicast group for live audio and video streaming over the Internet/intranets. We compare the application-level QoS of these schemes by simulation with the Tiers model, which is a sophisticated network topology model and reflects hierarchical structure of the Internet. The comparison clarifies their features and finds the best scheme in the environment. The simulation result shows that the distributed control scheme provides the highest quality of inter-destination synchronization among the three schemes in heavily loaded networks, while in lightly loaded networks the other schemes can have almost the same quality as that of the distributed control scheme.

  • An Audio-Video Multipath Streaming Scheme with Media Synchronization Control: Application-Level QoS Assessment in a Wireless Ad Hoc Network

    This paper proposes the MultiPath streaming scheme with Media Synchronization control (MPMS) for audio-video transmission in wireless ad hoc networks. In many audio-video streaming applications, media compensate each other from a perceptual point of view. On the basis of this property, we treat the two streams as separate transport streams, and then the source transmits them into two different routes if multiple routes to the destination are available. The multipath transmission disturbs the temporal structure of the streams; in MPMS, the disturbance is remedied by media synchronization control. In order to implement MPMS in this paper, we enhance the existing Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol. We compare the application-level QoS of MPMS and three other schemes for audio-video transmission by simulation with ns-2. In the simulation, we also assess the influence of the multipath transmission on other traffic. The simulation result shows that MPMS is effective in achieving high QoS at the application-level.
