  • Current Situation of IMT-2000 Radio Transmission Technology Study in Japan

    Radio transmission technologies for IMT-2000 are being studied and standardized all over the world. Several national/regional standardization bodies are developing proposals on radio transmission technologies to meet the cut off date of June 30, 1998 set by ITU. This paper shows necessity to develop and standardize IMT-2000 in Japan, principle attitude on IMT-2000 standardization, selection process of W-CDMA, and the current situation of study on IMT-2000 in ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and Businesses).

  • Wideband Wireless Access Based on DS-CDMA

    Wideband wireless access based on direct sequence code division multiple access, called coherent multi-rate W-CDMA in this paper, designed for next generation mobile communications systems is introduced. It employs inter-cell asynchronous operation with a fast cell search algorithm, orthogonal multi-spreading factor (SF) forward links, and pilot symbol assisted coherent reverse and forward links. Inter-cell asynchronous cell site operation facilitates the continuous deployment of the system from outdoors to indoors. An orthogonal multi-SF forward link allows flexible offering of different multi-rate services to users without losing orthogonality. Gains in the radio link capacity and coverage are obtained from the use of coherent Rake combining and fast transmit power control (TPC) in both forward and reverse links. Computer simulation and field experiment results of the coherent multi-rate W-CDMA radio link performance are presented. Also presented are interference cancellation and adaptive antenna array techniques that can significantly improve the link capacity and coverage.

  • Wideband CDMA Systems in TDD-Mode Operation for IMT-2000

    We previously proposed a next generation cellular system for IMT-2000 based on wideband DS-CDMA with TDD scheme and have evaluated its performance by computer simulation, laboratory and field experiments. This paper presents the design concept of TDD-mode operation on wideband DS-CDMA systems. These systems employ almost the same techniques with a little difference as FDD-mode. We also present the schemes of the TDD-mode specific techniques such as fast cell search, transmission diversity and transmitter power control and show the evaluation results of them are effective. Performance can be improved by use of enhanced techniques such as interference cancellation and adaptive antenna array diversity.

    MTDMA (Multimedia, Multimode TDMA) system has been developed for the 3rd generation mobile communications. An adaptive modulation technique is employed, which select 16 QAM or QPSK modulations fit for the O (Indoor Office)/P (Outdoor to Indoor and Pedestrian) communication environments. The maximum user rate of 4 Mbps is realized. Basic specification is described for O, P and V environments.

    Experimental results of 1. 92 Mbps data transmission over a 20 MHz wideband DS-CDMA (W-CDMA) mobile radio link under frequency selective multipath fading are presented. 1. 92 Mbps data were transmitted using an orthogonal multicode transmission scheme. The combined use of antenna diversity reception, RAKE combining, and concatenated channel coding is applied to improve transmission performance. Laboratory and field experimental results demonstrated the possibility of 2 Mbps data transmission in a real fading environment.

    We previously proposed a next generation cellular system for IMT-2000 based on the Wideband DS-CDMA with TDD scheme (W-CDMA/TDD) and have evaluated its performance by computer simulation, laboratory and field experiment. With the W-CDMA/TDD, because of its correlation between the downlink and the uplink, transmission and reception space diversity (SD) at a base station and open-loop transmit power control (TPC) can be simply realized. This paper reports performance of laboratory and field experiments using a developed testbed. The results shows it has been confirmed that transmission and reception SD and open-loop TPC have sufficient performance under a field environment as well as laboratory environment.

  • Performance Evaluation on Power Control and Diversity of Next-Generation CDMA System

    In this paper, we briefly describe the proposed radio access scheme based on CDMA/FDD for next-generation mobile radio systems, and evaluate its performance through laboratory and field experiments on transmission power control (TPC) and diversity, which are the key technologies to achieve efficient CDMA systems. The design of the practical TPC method is discussed, and a robust method is presented for operation in low signal to interference power ratio (SIR). Laboratory experiments demonstrate that space and path diversity effectively improve the TPC performance in the Doppler frequency range of 40 to 80 Hz, and reduces the required Eb/N0 to achieve the BER of 10-3. The necessary diversity order for multipath fading mitigation in all the Doppler frequency range is also investigated. Through the field experiments in urban area of Tokyo using a developed system at 0. 96 Mcps, a low required Eb/N0 of 2. 8 dB can be obtained because of the effectiveness of the diversity.

    The next generation mobile communications systems must support multimedia communications services as well as conventional voice service. DS-CDMA is regarded as the most promising candidate, because it is indispensable to cope with multimedia. The system capacity of DS-CDMA system is limited by the total interference level. As a result, in DS-CDMA systems many users suffer very poor communication quality if the total interference level exceeds this limit. Therefore, this paper considers smoothing interference fluctuation using the difference between voice and data in a type of QoS (quality of service). In other words, voice communication is suitable for a loss system because the quality of voice communication is delay-sensitive. On the other hand, data communication is suitable for a waiting system because the quality of data communication is non-delay-sensitive. This paper focuses on a system that applies a circuit switching method for voice traffic and a reservation type packet switching method for data traffic and proposes a data traffic control method. In this proposed data traffic control method, a base station controls data transmission from a mobile station to utilize unused voice traffic resources. As a result, the proposed method achieves highly efficient use of the radio spectra by smoothing interference fluctuation in DS-CDMA systems. This paper evaluates the performance level of the proposed method from a system capacity standpoint. It is shown that the proposed method achieves higher system capacity in voice/data integrated transmission.

  • Variable-Rate Data Transmission with Blind Rate Detection for Coherent DS-CDMA Mobile Radio

    Variable-rate data transmission with no rate indicator is described for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) mobile radio. The variable-rate data to be transmitted is block-encoded using a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) and then convolutionally encoded before being spread. The convolutionally encoded data is always brought to the zero state at the end of the data sequence within each frame. Blind rate detection is incorporated into the process of Viterbi-decoding the received convolutional-coded frame data. At each possible end bit position (i. e. , each possible transmission rate), the trellis path arriving at the zero-state is selected if its path metric satisfies a certain condition, and is then traced back to recover the frame data. CRC is used to determine whether the recovered data is correct or not. The path selection condition is described. The average frame error rate (FER) and average false detection rate (FDR) are evaluated by computer simulation under frequency selective multipath Rayleigh fading environments and the results are compared with another variable-rate transmission scheme using a rate indicator.

    To enhance the anti-fading technique of direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) schemes in land mobile radio communication systems, a two-dimensional RAKE reception (2D-RAKE) scheme in beam space digital beam forming (BS-DBF) antenna configuration is proposed. The proposed scheme is applied to cellular base stations where the received signals in the reverse link are relieved from multipath fading by means of enhanced RAKE combining in spacial and temporal domains. Fundamental performance in the reverse link under multipath fading environments is investigated by computer simulation applying a wideband propagation channel model.

  • Matched Filter-Based RAKE Combiner for Wideband DS-CDMA Mobile Radio

    A RAKE combiner based on a matched filter (MF) can be relatively easily implemented since the despread signal components that have propagated along different paths appear sequentially at the MF output. An important design problem is how to accurately select the paths having sufficiently large signal-to-noise power ratios (SNRs). This paper proposes a simple path selection algorithm that uses two selection thresholds. The first threshold is to select the paths that provide largest SNRs. However, as the total received signal power (sum of the signal powers of all paths) decreases, some of the selected paths become noisy. Therefore, we introduce a second threshold that discards the noisy or noise-only paths from among those selected by the first threshold. We apply the proposed path selection algorithm to a pilot symbol-assisted coherent RAKE combiner and find by computer simulations a near optimum set of the two thresholds in frequency selective multipath Rayleigh fading channels. Several power delay profile shapes are considered. The simulation results demonstrate that the MF-based RAKE combiner with the two selection thresholds can achieve a bit-error-rate (BER) performance close to the ideal case (i. e. , the paths to be used for RAKE combining are selected for each power delay profile such that the required signal energy per information bit-to-noise spectrum density ratio (Eb/N0) is minimized).

  • Performance of Adaptive Array Antennas with Multicarrier DS/CDMA in a Mobile Fading Environment

    For usage in fading environments, the idea of utilizing radio signal processing with software programmable devices promises greater flexibility and functionality. However, to realize these benefits very high performance DPSs and AD converters are required, especially for adaptive antennas with CDMA. One potential method of reducing the implementation complexity is to employ multicarrier (MC) modulation as it allows parallel signal processing in addition to its benefits in combating fading and ISI effects. This paper proposes a system utilizing MC DS/CDMA and a recursive adaptive array antenna processing algorithm for estimating the array response vector (array manifold) and hence the optimal weights. In order to evaluate this system performance results obtained through computer simulations are presented. The proposed MC system improves the accuracy of the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of the signal by 2 degrees as compared with a single carrier system. It is also shown that the proposed adaptive array antenna algorithm for MC DS/CDMA reduces the number of iterations of the power method significantly and allows parallel processing of the adaptive algorithm.

    The Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunication Systems (FPLMTS) standards have made it quite clear that in the near future, the capability in doing wireless data transmission will become necessary in order to make the tether-free use of multimedia applications possible. CDMA is considered the most appropriate and probable radio access method of FPLMTS for its high capacity and flexibility in accommodation of multimedia and variable rate users. In order to further increase the capacity of CDMA system, several techniques have been studied and proposed such as an interference canceller and adaptive array antenna. We propose the novel multi-user detection type interference cancellation technique named SRIC (Symbol Ranking type IC) in this paper. SRIC is very feasible for its small amount of operation compared with other multi-user detection type ICs and can be added to a base station with slight alteration according to the requirement of higher capacity. The performance of SRIC depends on the method of calculating the likelihood. We studied three methods. In order to reduce the operations, we tried to propose two more methods. We confirmed that SRIC can make the system capacity about three times greater than that of a conventional RAKE receiver. We also confirmed that SRIC can be reduce its operations very much at some sacrifice of their performance. There are nine variants of SRIC, which have a trade off between performance and amount of operation. We can choose one of them which is most fit to our requirement. The first operation of SRIC is common with that of a conventional RAKE receiver. Therefore, SRIC can be introduced to conventional systems afterwards by inserting the interference canceller block which functions replica generation, removal, and ranking between output of a RAKE receiver and FEC decoder.

  • A Novel Transmission Diversity System in TDD-CDMA

    This paper presents a novel transmission diversity scheme for code division multiple access system. Conventional diversity receivers in mobile stations require space and complicated circuits, however, the proposed diversity schemes present significant diversity effect without any diversity equipment at the mobile station. It is possible to use the transmitter diversity at the base station by using the feature of time division duplex (TDD) which has strongly correlated fading patterns in both forward and reverse link. Computer simulation is performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed systems for single user environment. The performance of the system 1, which select best situated antenna, is analyzed and the BER performance for multiple access is presented.

  • Performance Comparison between Time-Multiplexed Pilot Channel and Parallel Pilot Channel for Coherent Rake Combining in DS-CDMA Mobile Radio

    This paper compares the BER performance of two types of pilot channel-based coherent Rake combining achievable by the use of weighted multi-slot averaging (WMSA) channel estimation filter in DS-CDMA transmission links. One is for the time-multiplexed pilot channel and the other is for the parallel pilot channel. The WMSA channel estimation filter weights and averages the received pilot over a period of several slots to improve the BER performance. We propose the WMSA channel estimation filters for time-multiplexed pilot and parallel pilot structures. Achievable BER performance under frequency-selective fading environments is computer simulated. The simulation results show that almost same BER performance can be achieved for both pilot channel structures when the same energy is allocated to the pilot.

  • Coherent Delay-Locked Code Tracking Loop Using Time-Multiplexed Pilot for DS-CDMA Mobile Radio

    Pilot symbol-assisted coherent delay-locked code tracking loop (PSA-CDLL) is proposed for DS-CDMA mobile radio. PSA-CDLL applies pilot symbol-assisted coherent channel estimation and uses only the in-phase component of the despread signal for controlling the received spreading code timing. The impact of the multiple access interference (MAI) and background noise can be decreased by about 3 dB compared to non-coherent DLL. The performance of the proposed PSA-CDLL is evaluated by computer simulation. Computer simulation results show that it can significantly reduce the rms tracking jitter of regenerated spreading code replica, thereby improving the bit error rate (BER) performance in fading environments.

  • Implementation of and Field Experiment on High-Speed Multimedia Multimode TDMA Radio Transmission Systems

    This paper gives laboratory as well as the results of field experiment and describes the implementation of a system developed to evaluate and demonstrate multimedia multimode time division multiple access (MTDMA). The equipment has been developed with the radio transmission technology for future public land mobile telecommunication systems (FPLMTS/IMT-2000) in mind. To meet FPLMTS/IMT-2000 requirements the system employs the following techniques: a hybrid multiplex modulation system consisting of quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM), a high data transmission bit rate of 2 Mbit/sec for QPSK, 4 Mbit/sec for 16QAM, and diversity combining and adaptive equalization technique. For the diversity adaptive equalization technique, we used a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) consisting of one feedback (FB) transversal filter and two feed-forward transversal (FF) filters. The output signals from two branches of space diversity reception antennas are then fed to the two FF filters of the DFE. For middle-speed mobile radio communication for a micro-cellular pedestrian environment, a QPSK modulation system is selected to obtain wide coverage, while for a pico-cellular indoor office environment, the delay spread is small, and a 16QAM modulation system is selected to achieve a high bit rate. The results given here of laboratory and field experiments show the technical feasibility of MTDMA for future public land mobile telecommunication systems.

  • Transmission Experiments on Slow-FH/16QAM System for Land Mobile Communications

    A slow frequency-hopping/16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (slow-FH/16QAM) system based on time-division-multiple-access (TDMA) is appropriate for third-generation land mobile cellular communications because of its high immunity to interference. The system uses 16QAM for high spectral efficiency and slow-FH and forward-error-correction (FEC) for high-quality transmission. To reduce sensitivity to interference, the system uses an improved decoding scheme based on a minimum Euclidean-distance which is effective when the interference level is dispersed by FH. The bit error rate (BER) of the system due to interference has been evaluated in a previous study, both theoretically and by computer simulation. Although computer-simulated results showed that the system improved the BER, the hardware feasibility was not considered. This paper presents a hardware implementation of the system and the results of experimental transmission using equipment we developed to verify the system and to confirm the BER performance. The laboratory experimental results indicated that the system could provide high-quality transmission over a channel that has frequency-selective fading and co-channel interference. This system provided an Eb/N0 of 9 dB with space diversity and one of 15 dB without it, when BER=10-3 and fd=120 Hz. Field experiments were also conducted in a suburban area of Tokyo to demonstrate the BER performance. The results meant that the system could lower sensitivity to vehicle velocity more than a system without FH and that the BER performance of the system was improved notably against that of a system without FH, especially at low vehicle velocity.

  • 6. 144Mbit/s Burst Modem with an Adaptive Equalizer for TDMA Mobile Radio Communications

    This paper describes methods used in the design of a high speed burst modem applied for mobile communication systems. The modem has burst mode operations including burst mode AGC (automatic gain control), burst mode BTR (bit timing recovery), adaptive equalization, and diversity based on a selection algorithm to achieve a higher performance in multipath fading channels. Moreover, the performance of the burst modem, which is developed using analog signal processing devices, DSPs (digital signal processors), and FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays), is analyzed experimentally. Results show that the modem can suppress irreducible BER values below 1. 0e-6 and attains a 2 dB implicit diversity gain over multipath fading channels modeled by a two-ray impulse response system with independent Rayleigh fading.

    This paper proposes a multiple QoS control scheme that combines the head-of-line priority (HOLP) discipline with equivalent-window connection admission control (CAC). The proposed scheme can support the different cell loss ratios of both delay-sensitive traffic in high-priority buffers and delay-tolerant traffic in low-priority buffers. The CAC scheme extends a measurement-based CAC algorithm for a single buffer to the low-priority buffer with the HOLP discipline to provide the cell loss ratio objective. We introduce an equivalent window for monitoring low-priority cell streams. The equivalent window size equals the period within which the number of times the low-priority buffer is scanned to read cells is constant. Thus the equivalent window size varies with the high-priority queueing state. Numerical results indicate that the proposed QoS control scheme using the equivalent-window CAC can utilize network resources more effectively than the conventional control scheme which is Virtual Path (VP) separation for different cell loss requirement services. In addition, it is confirmed that the proposed scheme provides conservative admissible loads. Thus, this proposed scheme can achieve large statistical gains while providing both high-priority and low-priority cell loss ratio objectives. The proposed scheme will be very useful for cost-effective multimedia services that have different QoS requirements.

  • A Proposal of Dual Zipfian Model for Describing HTTP Access Trends and Its Application to Address Cache Design

    This paper proposes the Dual Zipfian Model addressing how to describe HTTP access trends in large-scale data communication networks, and discusses how to design the capacity of address cache tables in an edge router of the networks. We show that destination addresses of packets can be characterized by two types of Zipf's law. Fundamental concept of the Dual Zipfian Model is in complementary use of these laws, and we can derive the relationship between the number of accesses and the number of destination addresses. Experimental results show that the relation gives a good approximation. Applying this relation, we derive cache hit probabilities of the address cache table that incorporates high-speed address resolution. Using the probabilities, design issues including the capacity of the cache tables and aging algorithms of cache entries are also discussed.

  • Direct-Detection Optical Asynchronous CDMA Systems with Double Optical Hard-Limiters: APD Noise and Thermal Noise

    Performance of optical asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems with double optical hard-limiters is analyzed in the presence of avalanche photodiode (APD) noise and thermal noise. Optical orthogonal codes (OOC's) are employed as signature sequence codes. In the analysis, chips are assumed to be synchronous among users: the chip synchronous case. Thus, the performance results in the upper bound on the performance of the asynchronous system. The results show that the optical asynchronous CDMA systems with double optical hard-limiters have good performance in the presence of the APD noise and the thermal noise even when the number of simultaneous users is large.

  • A Study on Channel Usage in a CellularAd-Hoc United Communication System for Operational Robots

    A communication system which attains an efficient amalgamation of base station (BS) type cellular communication and non-BS type direct communication for mobile terminals (MTs), "cellularad-hoc united communication system," is proposed. In this system, whether a cellular system or an ad-hoc communication system is chosen by distance and whether the condition is good or not between communicating MTs. In other words, when two terminals are relatively near each other and are in sufficient conditions to communicate directly, they select the ad-hoc communication, while for other cases they use the cellular system. The proposed system was confirmed to have effective channel usage and low battery consumption from the simulation results. It can be also said that this system is suited especially for MTs which tend to communicate with closer partners such as operational mobile robots and autonomous carrier vehicles.

    This paper proposes a measurement scheme of instantaneous signal-to-average interference plus background noise ratio (SIR) for SIR-based fast transmit power control (TPC) using time-multiplexed pilot symbols on the reverse link of DS-CDMA mobile radio. Both pilot and data are used for signal power measurement, but pilot symbols are used for measurement of average interference plus noise power. By the means of computer simulation, the TPC parameters, i. e. , SIR measurement period and step size, are optimized to maximize the link capacity in a Rayleigh fading environment. The capacity of the power controlled reverse link with channel coding and Rake combining is evaluated to understand the effects of the number of resolvable propagation paths, fading maximum Doppler frequency(or mobile traveling speed), and antenna diversity reception in single-cell and multi-cell environments.

    An improved pilot symbol-assisted channel estimation filter, called the weighted multi-slot averaging(WMSA)channel estimation filter, is presented for DS-CDMA transmission links using coherent RAKE combining. Known pilot symbols are periodically time-multiplexed with the sequence of transmitted data symbols; they are placed at the beginning of each data slot. The WMSA channel estimation filter extends the observation interval over several slots. The average bit error rate (BER) performance achievable with coherent RAKE combining using the proposed WMSA channel estimation filter is evaluated by computer simulations in a frequency selective multipath Rayleigh fading channel and the results are compared with those achievable with the use of other channel estimation filters such as an interpolation filter. The DS-CDMA reverse link requires fast transmit power control(TPC). In this paper, we also consider fast TPC based on the measurement of signal-to-interference plus background noise ratio(SIR). The average BER performance with the time-multiplexed pilot channel is also compared with that with the parallel pilot channel.

  • Fast Cell Search Algorithm in Inter-Cell Asynchronous DS-CDMA Mobile Radio

    Inter-cell asynchronous DS-CDMA cellular mobile radio allows continuous system deployment from outdoors to indoors since no outer timing source is required. All the forward link channels(control and traffic channels)of each cell site are first spread by orthogonal short spreading codes and then randomized by a long random code uniquely assigned to each cell site. However, inter-cell asynchronous systems generally require much longer cell search time than inter-cell synchronous systems. This paper proposes a fast cell search algorithm based on the periodic masking of the long random code when transmitting the control channel(CCH)signal. The same short spreading code is used for the CCHs of all cell sites. The same short spreading code periodically appears in the signals transmitted from all cell sites so the mobile station can detect the long random code timing(or more precisely the masking timing)by using a matched filter. By grouping the long random codes used in the system and transmitting a group identification(GI)code from each cell site during the masking period, we can avoid searching all long random codes. This significantly reduces the cell search time. Simulation results demonstrate that cell search can be accomplished in less than 500 ms at 90% of the locations when the number of long random codes(having a repetition period of 10 ms)is 512 and the number of those per group is 32.

  • Novel DOA Estimation Method for HA Adaptive Array Applicable to TDMA Mobile Satellite Communication Systems

    The applications of adaptive arrays based on the digital beam forming technique are receiving wide attention. However, the adaptive control algorithm of the array antennas under TDMA systems is not well considered even though it requires particular consideration due to its intermittent bursts. In this paper, first, we propose a novel DOA (Direction of Arrival) estimation method which is suitable for TDMA bursts. Second, the HA (Howells-Applebaum) adaptive array based on the proposed DOA estimation method will be constructed for the terminals in the mobile communication systems using non-geostationary satellites . Then the performance of the DOA estimation method and the HA adaptive array will be examined through computer simulations and experiments.

  • Actual Gain of CPW-Fed Active Integrated Antennas for Television Receiver

    Two types of CPW-fed active antenna for television receivers, printed on thin dielectric film, are analyzed numerically and experimentally and their broadband operations are reported. The actual gain of the receiving active antenna is expressed in terms of the transducer power gain of the amplifier circuit and the effective length of the passive antenna. Between the feed point of the passive antenna element and the CPW, the silicon transistor 2SC2585 or 2SC3604 is integrated with a dipole antenna or loop antenna. The actual gains of a dipole antenna with 24 cm length are more than 8 dBd (relative gain to the standard half-wave dipole) at frequencies from 470 to 770 MHz for television channels 13-62 in Japan. In the case of a loop antenna with a size of 25. 8 cm12 cm, actual gains of more than 3. 5 dBd are obtained for channels 1-12, from 90 to 222 MHz, and more than 6. 5 dBd for channels 13-62, from 470 to 770 MHz.

  • Performance of Single-Bit Adaptive Step-Size Closed-Loop Power Control Scheme in DS-CDMA Systems

    We propose and evaluate a single-bit adaptive step-size closed-loop power control (AS-CLPC) scheme which is adaptable to a dynamically changing radio channel. We also investigate the effect of the mobile terminal (MT) velocity on system performance when the proposed AS-CLPC scheme is employed. The proper power control constant of the AS-CLPC scheme is obtained by solving a polynomial equation. Compared with the IS-95 single-bit fixed step-size CLPC scheme, the proposed single-bit AS-CLPC scheme can reduce link margin (LM) by about 3 dB when the outage probability is below 0. 03 and a single fading path reception in the base station is assumed. System performance such as link availability and throughput can be improved by utilizing this proposed CLPC scheme in the outdoor radio propagation channel where time-selective fading occurs.

  • A New Radar System Operating in the Forward-Scatter Region

    A new radar system is presented, which consists of one main radar and cooperative plural transponders. The transponders are integrated in the respective retrodirective antennas which are arranged beyond the horizon in such a manner as they surround the main radar. An algorithm for determining the three-dimensional target position is given. Computer simulations have been made for different target positions by assuming measurement errors. A target whose monostatic radar cross section is small or has been specially reduced by absorbing materials could be detected by this system if it is properly constructed.
