  • Traffic-Aware Network Planning and Green Operation with BS Sleeping and Cell Zooming

    The traffic load of cellular networks varies in both time and spatial domains, causing many base stations (BS) to be under-utilized. Assisted by cell zooming, dynamic BS sleep control is considered as an effective way to improve energy efficiency during low traffic hours. Therefore, how densely the BSs should be deployed with cell zooming and BS sleeping is an important issue. In this paper, we explore the energy-optimal cellular network planning problem with dynamic BS sleeping and cell zooming for the cases in which traffic is uniformly distributed in space but time-varying. To guarantee the quality of multi-class services, an approximation method based on Erlang formula is proposed. Extensive simulations under our predefined scenarios show that about half of energy consumption can be saved through dynamic BS sleeping and power control. Surprisingly, the energy-optimal BS density we obtained is larger than the one without considering BS sleeping. In other words, deploying more BSs may help to save energy if dynamic BS sleeping is executed.

    This study investigated the distribution of attention to frontal space in augmented reality (AR). We conducted two experiments to compare binocular and monocular observation when an AR image was presented. According to a previous study, when participants observed an AR image in monocular presentation, they perceived the AR image as more distant than in binocular vision. Therefore, we predicted that attention would need to be shifted between the AR image and the background in not the monocular observation but the binocular one. This would enable an observer to distribute his/her visual attention across a wider space in the monocular observation. In the experiments, participants performed two tasks concurrently to measure the size of the useful field of view (UFOV). One task was letter/number discrimination in which an AR image was presented in the central field of view (the central task). The other task was luminance change detection in which dots were presented in the peripheral field of view (the peripheral task). Depth difference existed between the AR image and the location of the peripheral task in Experiment 1 but not in Experiment 2. The results of Experiment 1 indicated that the UFOV became wider in the monocular observation than in the binocular observation. In Experiment 2, the size of the UFOV in the monocular observation was equivalent to that in the binocular observation. It becomes difficult for a participant to observe the stimuli on the background in the binocular observation when there is depth difference between the AR image and the background. These results indicate that the monocular presentation in AR is superior to binocular presentation, and even in the best condition for the binocular condition the monocular presentation is equivalent to the binocular presentation in terms of the UFOV.

  • An Efficient TOA-Based Localization Scheme Based on BS Selection in Wireless Sensor Networks

    In this paper, we present an efficient time-of-arrival (TOA)-based localization method for wireless sensor networks. The goal of a localization system is to accurately estimate the geographic location of a wireless device. In real wireless sensor networks, accurately estimating mobile device location is difficult because of the presence of various errors. Therefore, localization methods have been studied in recent years. In indoor environments, the accuracy of wireless localization systems is affected by non-line-of-sight (NLOS) errors. The presence of NLOS errors degrades the performance of wireless localization systems. In order to effectively estimate the location of the mobile device, NLOS errors should be recognized and mitigated in indoor environments. In the TOA-based ranging method, the distance between the two wireless devices can be computed by multiplying a signal's propagation delay time by the speed of light. TOA-based localization measures the distance between the mobile station (MS) and three or more base stations (BSs). However, each of the NLOS errors of the measured distance between the i-th BS and the MS is different due to dissimilar obstacles in the direct signal path between the two nodes. In order to accurately estimate the location in a TOA-based localization system, an optimized localization algorithm that selects three measured distances with fewer NLOS errors is necessary. We present an efficient TOA-based localization scheme that combines three selected BSs in wireless sensor networks. This localization scheme yields improved localization performance in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, performance tests are performed, and the simulation results are verified through comparisons between various localization methods and the proposed method. As a result, proposed localization scheme using BS selection achieves remarkably better localization performance than the conventional methods. This is verified by experiments in real environments, and demonstrates a performance analysis in NLOS environments. By using BS selection, we will show an efficient and effective TOA-based localization scheme in wireless sensor networks.

  • Specific Absorption Rates and Temperature Elevations due to Wireless Radio Terminals in Proximity to a Fetus at Gestational Ages of 13, 18, and 26 Weeks

    As the electromagnetic (EM) environment is becoming increasingly diverse, it is essential to estimate specific absorption rates (SARs) and temperature elevations of pregnant females and their fetuses under various exposure situations. This study presents calculated SARs and temperature elevations in a fetus exposed to EM waves. The calculations involved numerical models for the anatomical structures of a pregnant Japanese woman at gestational stages of 13, 18, and 26 weeks; the EM source was a wireless portable terminal placed close to the abdomen of the pregnant female model. The results indicate that fetal SARs and temperature elevations are closely related to the position of the fetus relative to the EM source. We also found that, although the fetal SAR caused by a half-wavelength dipole antenna is sometimes comparable to or slightly more than the International Commission Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection guidelines, it is lower than the guideline level in more realistic situations, such as when a planar inverted-F antenna is used. Furthermore, temperature elevations were significantly below the threshold set to prevent the child from being born with developmental disabilities.

    According to the match-degree between lightpaths, an HC-sharing approach is proposed to assign wavelength for an arriving transmission request for dynamic traffic in LOBS-based datacenter networks. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach can provide lower block probability than other approaches for both unicast and multicast transmissions.

    This paper aims to achieve a high-quality exposure level quantification of whole-body average-specific absorption rates (WBA-SARs) for small animals in a medium-size reverberation chamber (RC). A two-step method, which incorporates the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical solutions with electric field measurements in an RC-type exposure system, has been used as an evaluation method to determine the whole-body exposure level in small animals. However, there is little data that quantitatively demonstrate the validity and accuracy of this method in an RC up to now. In order to clarify the validity of the two-step method, we compare the physical quantities in terms of electric field strength and WBA-SARs by using a direct numerical assessment method known as the method of moments (MoM) with ten homogenous gel phantoms placed in an RC with 2GHz exposure. The comparison results show that the relative errors between the two-step method and the MoM approach are approximately below 10%, which reveals the validity and usefulness of the two-step technique. Finally, we perform a dosimetric analysis of the WBA-SARs for anatomical mouse models with the two-step method and determine the input power related to our developed RC-exposure system to achieve a target exposure level in small animals.

    Anomaly detection has several practical applications in different areas, including intrusion detection, image processing, and behavior analysis among others. Several approaches have been developed for this task such as detection by classification, nearest neighbor approach, and clustering. This paper proposes alternative clustering algorithms for the task of anomaly detection. By employing a weighted kernel extension of the least squares fitting of linear manifolds, we develop fuzzy clustering algorithms for kernel manifolds. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms achieve promising performances compared to hard clustering techniques.

    We construct two types of reverberation chambers, one is 4(m) × 2(m) × 2(m)-sized and the other is 2(m) × 2(m) × 2(m)-sized for realizing a multipath-rich environment for MIMO-OTA measurements. In this paper, we measure fundamental propagation characteristics, including amplitude statistics, multipath-delay statistics, spatial correlation characteristics, and cross polarization characteristics over a frequency range of 800MHz to 5GHz in our reverberation chamber. Also, we confirm the existence of spatially uniform area of 1m2 area, which might be sufficiently large to set a device under test (DUT) in the chamber. Theoretical considerations about the characteristics are also given to support the design of reverberation chamber.

  • A Novel SAR-Probe Calibration Method Using a Waveguide Aperture in Tissue-Equivalent Liquid Open Access

    A novel method for calibrating the probes used in standard measurement systems to evaluate SAR (specific absorption rate) of the radio equipment operating at frequencies over 3GHz is proposed. As for the proposed method, the electric-field distribution produced by a waveguide aperture installed in a liquid container is used to calibrate the SAR probe. The field distribution is shown to be the same as that given by a conventional calibration method by analytically deriving a closed-form expression for the field produced by the waveguide aperture with the help of the paraxial approximation. Comparing the approximated and measured distributions reveals that the closed-form expression is valid for the electric-field distribution near the central axis of the aperture. The calibration factor for a commercial SAR probe is evaluated by the proposed method and agrees well with that provided by the manufacturer of the probe.

  • Improving Small-Delay Fault Coverage of On-Chip Delay Measurement by Segmented Scan and Test Point Insertion

    With IC design entering the nanometer scale integration, the reliability of VLSI has declined due to small-delay defects, which are hard to detect by traditional delay fault testing. To detect small-delay defects, on-chip delay measurement, which measures the delay time of paths in the circuit under test (CUT), was proposed. However, our pre-simulation results show that when using on-chip delay measurement method to detect small-delay defects, test generation under the single-path sensitization is required. This constraint makes the fault coverage very low. To improve fault coverage, this paper introduces techniques which use segmented scan and test point insertion (TPI). Evaluation results indicate that we can get an acceptable fault coverage, by combining these techniques for launch off shift (LOS) testing under the single-path sensitization condition. Specifically, fault coverage is improved 27.02∼47.74% with 6.33∼12.35% of hardware overhead.

    This paper presents a printed circuit board (PCB) integrated multi-layered strip line tandem coupler, which used simple compensating ground through-hole (GTH) elements. The GTH elements on one end of the coupled line can generate additional capacitance between the signal line and the ground, which effectively compensates for the parasitic capacitance around the crossed signal lines on the opposite end of the coupled line. It has been experimentally demonstrated that the proposed coupler fabricated for the X-band is effective to improve both the reflection and the isolation characteristics.

    This paper propose a novel method for obtaining statistical results such as averages, variances, and correlations without leaking any raw data values from data-holders by using multiple pseudonyms. At present, to obtain statistical results using a large amount of data, we need to collect all data in the same storage device. However, gathering real-world data that were generated by different people is not easy because they often contain private information. The authors split the roles of servers into publishing pseudonyms and collecting answers. Splitting these roles, different entities can more easily join as pseudonym servers than in previous secure multi-party computation methods and there is less chance of collusion between servers. Thus, our method enables data holders to protect themselves against malicious attacks from data users. We also estimated a typical problem that occurred with our method and added a pseudonym availability confirmation protocol to prevent the problem. We report our evaluation of the effectiveness of our method through implementation and experimentation and discuss how we incorporated the WebSocket protocol and MySQL Memoty Storage Engine to remove the bottleneck and improve the implementation style. Finally, we explain how our method can obtain averages, variances, and correlation from 5000 data holders within 50 seconds.

  • An Adaptive High Gain Observer Design for Nonlinear Systems

    This paper studies an adaptive high gain observer design for nonlinear systems which have lower triangular nonlinearity with Lipschitz coefficient, depending on the control input. Because the gain of the proposed observer is tuned automatically by a simple update law, our design approach doesn't need any information about the Lipschitz constant. Also, it is shown that under some assumptions, the dynamic gain of the proposed observer is bounded and its estimation error converges to zero asymptotically. Finally, a numerical example is given to verify the effectiveness of our design approach.

  • Full-Order Observer for Discrete-Time Linear Time-Invariant Systems with Output Delays

    We design a full-order observer for discrete-time linear time-invariant systems with constant output delays. The observer design is based on the output delay model expressed by a two-dimensional state variable, with discrete-time and space independent variables. Employing a discrete-time state transformation, we construct an explicit strict Lyapunov function that enables us to prove the global exponential stability of the full-order observer error system with an explicit estimate of the exponential decay rate. The numerical example demonstrates the design of the full-order observer and illustrates the validity of the exponential stability.

    Dubé and Beaudoin proposed a lossless data compression called compression via substring enumeration (CSE) in 2010. We evaluate an upper bound of the number of bits used by the CSE technique to encode any binary string from an unknown member of a known class of k-th order Markov processes. We compare the worst case maximum redundancy obtained by the CSE technique for any binary string with the least possible value of the worst case maximum redundancy obtained by the best fixed-to-variable length code that satisfies the Kraft inequality.

    With the advances in wireless Internet and mobile positioning technology, location-based services (LBSs) have become popular. In LBSs, users must send their exact locations in order to use the services, but they may be subject to several privacy threats. To solve this problem, query processing algorithms based on a cloaking method have been proposed. The algorithms use spatial cloaking methods to blur the user's exact location in a region satisfying the required privacy threshold (k). With the cloaked region, an LBS server can execute a spatial query processing algorithm preserving their privacy. However, the existing algorithms cannot provide good query processing performance. To resolve this problem, we, in this paper, propose a k-NN query processing algorithm based on network Voronoi diagram for spatial networks. Therefore, our algorithm can reduce network expansion overhead and share the information of the expanded road network. In order to demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithms, we have conducted extensive performance evaluations. The results show that our algorithm achieves better performance on retrieval time than the existing algorithms, such as PSNN and kRNN. This is because our k-NN query processing algorithm can greatly reduce a network expansion cost for retrieving k POIs.

  • A Switchable Microwave Reflector Using Pin Diodes

    A switchable microwave reflector, reflection of which is actively controlled using diodes was proposed. Pin diodes have large resistance and capacitance without DC bias and small resistance and inductance with DC bias in microwave band. The reflector was designed by using the characteristics. In this paper, effects of a periodic structure on the reflector were verified with simulation and equivalent circuit model. A prototype reflector was able to switch between about $-20$ dB and $-0.1$ dB reflection coefficient at 2 GHz.

  • BICM-ID-Based IDMA: Convergence and Rate Region Analyses

    This paper considers uplink interleave division multiple access (IDMA), of which crucial requirement is the proper operability at a very low signal-to-interference-plus-noise power ratio (SINR) range. The primary objectives of this paper are threefold: (1) to demonstrate the achievability of near-capacity performance of bit interleaved coded modulation with iterative detection (BICM-ID) using very low rate single parity check and irregular repetition (SPC-IrR) codes at a very low SINR range, and hence the technique is effective in achieving excellent performance when it is applied for IDMA, (2) to propose a very simple multiuser detection (MUD) technique for the SPC-IrR BICM-ID IDMA which does not incur heavy per-iteration computational burden, and (3) to analyze the impacts of power allocation on the convergence property of MUD as well as on the rate region, by using the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart. The SPC-IrR code parameters are optimized by using the EXIT-constrained binary switching algorithm (EBSA) at a very low SINR range. Simulation results show that the proposed technique can achieve excellent near-capacity performance with the bit error rate (BER) curves exhibiting very sharp threshold, which significantly influences the convergence property of MUD. Furthermore, this paper presents results of the rate region analysis of multiple access channel (MAC) in the cases of equal and unequal power allocation, as well as of a counterpart technique. The results of the MAC rate region analysis show that our proposed technique outperforms the counterpart technique.

  • Wavelength-Routed Switching for 25-Gbit/s Optical Packets Using a Compact Transmitter Integrating a Parallel-Ring-Resonator Tunable Laser and an InGaAlAs EAM Open Access

    We describe wavelength-routed switching technology for 25-Gbit/s optical packets using a tunable transmitter that monolithically integrates a parallel-ring-resonator tunable laser and an InGaAlAs electro-absorption modulator (EAM). The transmitter provided accurate wavelength tunability with 100-GHz spacing and small output power variation. A 25-Gbit/s burst-mode optical-packet data was encoded onto the laser output by modulating the integrated EAM with a constant voltage swing of 2 V at 45$^{circ}$C. Clear eye openings were observed at the output of the 100 GHz-spaced arrayed-waveguide grating with error-free operation being achieved for all packets. The tunable transmitter is very promising for realizing a high-speed, large-port-count and energy-efficient wavelength-routing switch that enables the forwarding of 100-Gbit/s optical packets.

  • A New Substring Searching Algorithm

    This paper proposes a new algorithm for substring searching. Our algorithm is an improvement on the famous BM algorithm. When a mismatch happens while searching a substring (pattern), the BM algorithm will use two strategies to calculate shifting distances of the substring respectively and selects the larger one. In comparison, our algorithm uses each of the two strategies for their most suitable cases separately without a selection operation. Experimental results demonstrated that our algorithm is more efficient than the BM algorithm and the Quick Search algorithm, especially for binary strings and DNA strings.
