Massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) is a key technology to meet the increasing capacity demands that must be satisfied by next generation wireless systems. However, it is expensive to use linear power amplifiers when implementing a massive MIMO system as it will have hundreds of antennas. In this paper, considering that low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of transmit signals can facilitate hardware-friendly equipment with nonlinear but power-efficient amplifiers, we first formulate the precoding scheme as a PAPR minimization problem. Then, in order to obtain the optimal solution with low complexity, the precoding problem is recast into a Bayesian estimation problem by leveraging belief propagation algorithm. Eventually, we propose a low-PAPR approximate message passing (LP-AMP) algorithm based on belief propagation to ensure the good transmission performance and minimize the PAPR to realize practical deployments. Simulation results reveal that the proposed method can get PAPR reduction and adequate transmission performance, simultaneously, with low computational complexity. Moreover, the results further indicate that the proposed method is suitable for practical implementation, which is appealing for massive multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) systems.

Several kinds of techniques for excellent multi-user interference (MUI) cancellation have been proposed for direct-detection synchronous optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) systems. All these techniques utilize modified prime sequence codes (MPSCs) as signature codes and can remove MUI errors efficiently. In this paper, the features of three typical MUI cancellers are studied and compared in detail. The authors defined the parameter “decision distance” to show the feature of MUI cancellers. The bit error rate performance of each canceller is investigated by computer simulation and compared with that of the basic on-off keying (OOK) scheme without cancellation. Then, we investigate the relationship between the decision distance and the bit error rate performance. It is shown that every canceller has a better bit error rate performance than the basic OOK scheme. Especially, the equal weight orthogonal (EWO) scheme, whose decision distance is the largest, has the best error resistance property of the three MUI cancellers. The results show that the decision distance is a useful index to evaluate the error resistance property of MUI cancellation schemes.

In order to obtain the uniform film having well-defined lead halide-based layer perovskite structure, we proposed squeezed out method. It is found that the optimized condition with respect to docosylammonium bromide is revealed by employing hexadecylammonium bromide among tetradecylammonium bromide, hexadecylammonium bromide and octadecylammonium bromide.

Broadband single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) uplink using frequency-domain square-root Nyquist filtering is considered. The peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of filtered SC signals can be reduced by increasing the filter roll-off factor α. Furthermore, an additional frequency diversity gain can be obtained by making use of the excess bandwidth introduced by the transmit root Nyquist filtering. However, if the carrier-frequency separation is kept the same as in the case of α=0, the adjacent users' signal spectra overlap with the desired users' spectrum and the multiuser interference (MUI) is produced. In this paper, we propose two frequency-domain iterative MUI cancellation schemes which can achieve the frequency diversity gain through spectrum combining. The achievable bit error rate (BER) and throughput performances are evaluated by computer simulation.
Multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems are well suited for high data rate wireless multimedia services, due to their ability to convert frequency-selective fading channels to distinct flat fading channels with low complexity fast Fourier transform (FFT) devices. However, when multiple users are present, the performance of MC-CDMA systems is degraded by the multiuser interference (MUI) when the channel is frequency-selective. In order to mitigate MUI, we present a joint algorithm that combines transmit power control, antenna array processing and multiuser detection at the receiver. Interestingly, the frequency-selectivity that entails the MUI also provides multipath diversity which can help suppress the MUI. Performance of the algorithm in a number of MC-CDMA system models is evaluated in terms of the average transmit power to achieve the target signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR). Simulations confirm the outstanding performance of this algorithm compared with the existing ones in MC-CDMA systems.

We have developed novel humidity and gas detector system using quartz crystal oscillators (QCO) deposited with cellulose Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. We have realized stable humidity detection by the LB-based QCO sensor for extremely high humidity subsequent to the water dipping condition. Also, specific gaseous molecules such as alcohol could have been sensitively detected.

It is well-known that, in DS-CDMA downlink signal transmission, frequency-domain equalization (FDE) based on minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion can replace rake combining to achieve much improved bit error rate (BER) performance in severe frequency-selective fading channel. However, in uplink signal transmission, as each user's signal goes through a different channel, a severe multi-user interference (MUI) is produced and the uplink BER performance severely degrades compared to the downlink. When a small spreading factor is used, the uplink BER performance further degrades due to inter-chip interference (ICI). In this paper, we propose a frequency-domain multi-stage soft interference cancellation scheme for the DS-CDMA uplink and the achievable BER performance is evaluated by computer simulation. The BER performance comparison of the proposed cancellation technique and the multi-user detection (MUD) is also presented.

In this paper, the performance of OFDM-CDMA system in mobile communication channels with different detection algorithms is evaluated in terms of the probability of bit error as a function of processing gain. Both the frequency diversity and multi-user interference (MUI) are taken into account. The simulation results show that MUI is the dominant factor that affects system performance, and MMSE outperforms the other algorithms. Based on the simulation results, a modified system scheme is proposed which performs better than the conventional method.

The cationic dye, E-N-alkyl-4-[2-(4-alkyloxynaphthyl) ethenyl] quinolinium bromide has a wide-bodied chromophore with alkyl groups at opposite ends, i. e. CmH2m+1-D-π-A+-CnH2n+1 X-, where D and A are electron-donor and electron-acceptor groups respectively, π is a conjugated bridge and X- is the bromide counterion. It forms non-centrosymmetric Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) structures in which the packing is dependent upon the combination and compatibility of the alkyl groups. Films of two isomeric analogues where m + n = 34, have a layer thickness of 4.3 nm when the groups are significantly different (m = 12 and n = 22) which decreases to 2.5 nm when they are similar (m = 18 and n = 16). The latter adopts an interdigitating layer arrangement at both the upper and lower interfaces and it is the first example of a Lego-type structure with non-centrosymmetric alignment of the optically nonlinear chromophores. This is evidenced by the second-harmonic intensity, which increases quadratically with the number of layers, i. e. as .

For plasma simulations, we developed a one-dimensional (1d) Object-Oriented Particle-in-Cell code for X11-based Unix workstations (XOOPIC) by modifying the current two-dimensional version which was originally developed by PTSG (Plasma theory and simulation group) in the University of California at Berkeley. We implemented a simplified field solve and current deposition in the code. We retained three components of particle velocity, although the spatial variation for particle position and field components is limited to one dimension. To verify the function of the 1d code, we perform simulations with typical models such as the Child-Langmuir current model and electromagnetic wave propagation in plasma. In both cases, the simulation results quantitatively agree with the theory.

We developed a measuring system that measures both capacitance and transmittance of a liquid crystal (LC) cell simultaneously. We then studied the dynamic orientation process of nematic LC molecules between two-photochromic command surfaces. The command surfaces consist of a polymer monolayer bearing azobenzene side chains and they are deposited on glass substrate coated with indium-tin-oxide by using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The capacitance of LC cells increased and decreased alternately due to orientation transition in LC molecules by irradiating ultraviolet (UV) and visible light, respectively. Similarly, with the alternating irradiation of UV and visible lights, the transmittance of the LC cell changed periodically. Mean tilt angles of LC molecules under irradiation of UV and visible lights were evaluated from the results of capacitance and transmittance. It was found that the transient transmittance response was delayed to the transient capacitance under the UV irradiation. This result corresponds to that the LC molecules in homeotropic mode tend to remain the optical alignment.

To investigate the effect of alkyl chain length and adsorption time on the charge-transfer complex formation, ultraviolet-visible absorption and inelastic electron tunneling (IET) spectroscopy measurements were carried out for the tetramethylphenylenediamine (TMPD; donor molecule) adsorbed dodecyl-, pentadecyl- and octadecyl-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. In the optical absorption spectra, the main peak of LB films shows a red-shift depending on alkyl chain length and adsorption time. Furthermore, the dependence on alkyl chain length and adsorption time are also shown in the IET spectra. These results demonstrate that adsorption LB methods enable to control the adsorption ratio of functional molecules and the CT complex formation.

Control of electronic states of dye molecules (organic semiconductors) by introducing appropriate substituent groups has been examined. NH2 (electron-releasing group) and NO2 (electron-withdrawing group) were introduced in thiacarbocyanine dye to modify the electronic states of the dyes. The effect of modification was examined based on the properties of photoelectric cells made by the dye derivatives. Clear increase in photocurrent, more than ten times, was observed when modified dyes were used instead of the original dye. The result shows that the introduction of substituent groups for organic semiconductors is quite effective to control the electronic states, and the introduction can be regarded as doping in molecular level.

We fabricated junctions with a porphyrin polyimide (PORPI) monolayer, and then investigated the electron transport properties of the junctions from the current-voltage (I-V) and d2V/dI2-V measurements. Polyimide LB films without porphyrin were used as tunneling barriers. One large peak was seen at a voltage around 1.9 V, due to the excitation of electron transitions in PORPI molecules, whereas a step structure was not observed in the I-V characteristic.
