Phase information on wave scattering is not unique and greatly depends on a choice of the origin of coordinates in the measurement system. The present paper argues that the center of scattering for polygonal cylinders should not be a geometrical center of the obstacle such as a center of gravity but be a position that acts as a balance to the electrostatic field effects from edge points. The position is exactly determined in terms of edge positions, edge parameters and lengths of side of polygons. A few examples are given to illustrate a difference from the center of geometry.

We propose a novel short-range wireless communications technology that uses quasi-static electric fields; it enables data communication between devices separated by up to 10 cm via dielectric media at a speed of 10 Mbps. It is considered to be a secure wireless technology since communication area is restricted to below about 10 cm. To suppress electromagnetic radiation, we adopted a baseband transmission scheme in which the quasi-static electric field is directly modulated by 10 BASE-T data signals. Since the spectra of the data signals are concentrated to below 20 MHz, the amplitude of the electric field rapidly decreases outside the communication area. This contributes to enhancing security of the communications system. In this paper, we explain a basic principle of the short-range wireless communications technology. Since baseband data signals are carried by the quasi-static electric field, the quality of the communication is easily degraded by the existence of the earth ground. To isolate the communications system from the earth ground, we introduce a novel electro-optic sensor to receive the quasi-static electric field. With the electro-optic sensor, stable data communication is possible at 10 Mbps via dielectric materials, such as a wooden table.

Ge surfaces were irradiated by Ar+ ions at 600 eV with and without simultaneous supply of Ge or Al at room temperature. The surfaces ion-irradiated without any simultaneous metal supply were characterized by densely distributed conical protrusions. By contrast, various kinds of nanostructures were formed on the Ge surfaces ion-irradiated with a simultaneous metal supply. They featured cones and nanobelts with a flattened top for Ge supply cases, whereas they were characterized by the nanorods, nanobelts and nanowalls for Al supply cases. Very interestingly, most of the nanorods and nanobelts formed with an Al supply possessed a bottleneck structure. Thus, the Ge nanostructures were controllable in morphology by species and amount of simultaneously supplied metals.

The attenuation effect of the walls of a building on the electromagnetic (EM) field generated by an indoor power line communication (PLC) system is numerically investigated using the finite integration (FI) method. In particular, we focus on the frequency range 2-6 MHz, for which the attenuation effect has not yet been sufficiently analyzed. We model a single, finite-sized wall instead of an entire house, to focus on the dependence of the EM field on the wall structure and also reduce the computational resources required. The EM field strength is evaluated at many points on a view plane 10 m from the wall model, and the results are statistically processed to determine the attenuation effect of the wall. We show that the leakage of an EM field at 2-6 MHz is suppressed by about 30 dB by a reinforced concrete wall. We also show that the main contributor to the attenuation effect is the rebar in the wall. We then investigate the relation between the attenuation effect of a single-wall model and that of a house model. The results show that the attenuation effect of a house model is almost the same as that of a 15-m-wall model. We conclude that the use of a single-wall model instead of a house model is effective in determining the attenuation of the EM leakage. This simple structure reduces analytic space, time, and memory in the evaluation of the dependence on the wall structure of the EM leakage from indoor PLC systems.

The electromagnetic field emitted from UTP cable has been calculated by the 4-port network method from 30 MHz to 1 GHz. However it has not been clarified as to whether this method was effective in the frequency range of more than 1 GHz or not. In this paper, the electromagnetic field emitted from UTP cable was calculated by the moment method and it was compared with the calculated results by the 4-port network method. The wire grid model was developed to represent the propagation constants of UTP cable. The comparison of calculated and measured results confirms the validity of the model. A hybrid coupler was used to generate differential mode signal for the measurement. The comparison indicated that the calculated results by the moment method closely agreed with the measured results in the frequency range of 0.3 to 2 GHz and the difference was smaller than the results by the 4-port network method.

Placing a guard trace next to a signal line is the conventional technique for reducing the common-mode radiation from a printed circuit board. In this paper, the suppression of common-mode radiation from printed circuit boards having guard traces is estimated and evaluated using the imbalance difference model, which was proposed by the authors. To reduce common-mode radiation further, a procedure for designing a transmission line with guard traces is proposed. Guard traces connected to a return plane through vias are placed near a signal line and they decrease a current division factor (CDF). The CDF represents the degree of imbalance of a transmission line, and a common-mode electromotive force depends on the CDF. Thus, by calculating the CDF, we can estimate the reduction in common-mode radiation. It is reduced not only by placing guard traces, but also by narrowing the signal line to compensate for the variation in characteristic impedance due to the guard traces. Experimental results showed that the maximum reduction in common-mode radiation was about 14 dB achieved by placing guard traces on both sides of the signal line, and the calculated reduction agreed with the measured one within 1 dB. According to the CDF and characteristic impedance calculations, common-mode radiation can be reduced by about 25 dB while keeping the characteristic impedance constant by changing the gap between the signal line and the guard trace and by narrowing the width of the signal line.

In this paper, we propose a new system for controlling radiated sound directivity. The proposed system artificially induces a bending vibration on a planar diaphragm by vibrating it artificially using multiple vibrators. Because the bending vibration in this case is determined by not one but all of the accelerated vibrations, the vibration of the diaphragm can be controlled by modulating the accelerated vibration waveforms relatively for each frequency. As a consequence, the directivity of the radiated sound is also varied. To investigate the feasibility of this system, we constructed a prototype that has for a diaphragm a circular plate-one of the most typical shapes considered for discussing plate vibration-and three vibrators. The measurement data showed visually that with this system, surface vibration and sound directivity change depending on the phases of the accelerated vibrations.

A guard trace placed near a signal line reduces common-mode radiation from a printed circuit board. The reduction effect is evaluated by the imbalance difference model, which was proposed by the authors, when the guard trace has exactly the same potential as the return plane. However, depending on interval of ground connection of the guard trace, the radiation can increase when the guard trace resonates. In this paper, the authors show that the increase of radiation is caused by the common mode, and extend the imbalance difference model to explain a mechanism of increase of common-mode radiation. Additionally, the effective via location of the guard trace is proposed to reduce the number of vias. The guard trace voltage due to the resonance excites the common mode at the interface where the cross-sectional structure of the transmission line changes since the common-mode excitation is expressed by the product of the voltage and the difference of current division factors. To suppress the common-mode excitation, the guard trace should be grounded at the point where the cross-sectional structure changes. As a result, the common-mode radiation decreases even when the guard trace resonates.

A numerical scheme for the analytic continuation of radiation patterns of the azimuthal coordinate θ into the whole space over the complex plane is given. The scattering data given over the real space [0, 2π] are extended into the complex plane by using the recurrence formulas. An example shows the validity of mathematically exact evaluation for the scattering from polygonal cylinders.

For the construction of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) systems using their unique properties, a PCF coupler (PCFC) is one of the key components of the systems. The characteristics of the PCFC depend on the state of air holes in the tapered region of the PCFC because the state of air holes in the tapered region affects light propagation in the PCFC taper. In this paper, coupling characteristics of PCFCs were theoretically investigated. In PCFCs with air hole remaining tapers, we found that a smaller elongation ratio i.e. a stronger elongation is required to obtain optical coupling as an air hole pitch or a ratio of air hole diameter to pitch is larger. In PCFCs with air hole collapsed tapers, it was clarified that a dependence of extinction ratio on air hole collapsed elongation ratio is higher for smaller elongation ratio. It was also clarified that an air hole remaining PCFC has slow wavelength characteristics in extinction ratio compared to an air hole collapsed PCFC. Air hole remaining PCFCs and air hole collapsed PCFCs were fabricated using a CO2 laser irradiation technique. We could successfully control whether air holes in the PCFC taper were remaining or collapsed by adjusting the irradiated laser power in the elongation process of the PCFC fabrication. It was experimentally clarified that the air hole remaining PCFC has slow wavelength characteristics in extinction ratio compared to the air hole collapsed PCFC. The tendencies of the measured wavelength characteristics of PCFCs agree with those of numerical results.

In the Intelligent Transportation System, millimeter waves are used and antennas are required beam scanning ability. In the millimeter wave operation, a lens antenna is one of the prominent candidates which achieves wide angle beam scanning. Wide angle scanning can be achieved by introducing Abbe sine condition to lens surface shaping. Authors designed the shaped lens antenna that could achieve beam scanning 30. The narrow beam widths were maintained on the scanning plane. However, the beam widths were broadened on the transverse plane and large gain reduction was appeared. It was clarified that the reason of this beam deterioration was due to the phase delay on the antenna aperture. In this paper, an array feed composed of a group of rectangular horns is employed to compensate the phase delay on the antenna aperture. In designing the array feed, because there were no examples of phase radiation pattern synthesis, a new radiation pattern synthesis method is studied. Ability of the weighting matrix contained in the Least Mean Square synthesis method is paid attention. Adequate weighting matrix is found out. Satisfactory phase radiation pattern that can compensate the phase delay and an adequate amplitude radiation pattern are achieved. As a result, the improvement of scanned beam widths and antenna gains through the array feed are ensured. And adequate horn arrangements of the array feed for improving scanned beam are clarified. Moreover, in order to examine the realization of an actual array feed, the exact electromagnetic simulation is conducted. The validity of the radiation pattern synthesis is clarified.

To obtain a broad circular-coverage beam with low sidelobe, this paper proposes optimization design based on the quadratic programming approach for circular horns. The desired excitation coefficients of higher-order modes are pre-determined and also evaluated by calculating universal radiation patterns. We show a design example of a multimode horn which has circular-coverage beam with low sidelobe level of about -30 dB. The effectiveness of the designed horn is discussed by evaluating VSWR and radiation characteristics in X-band numerically and experimentally.

The reflection method is an accurate and simple method for measuring the radiation efficiency of a small antenna. However, it takes too long and has the disadvantage of underestimating the efficiency due to resonance in the cavity formed by the straight waveguide and two sliding shorts. To reduce the measurement time, one sliding short can be fixed while the other one is moved. To improve the accuracy of this technique, we can set the antenna to be measured at the center of the two sliding shorts or at a local anti-node of the standing wave in the waveguide. When one of the sliding shorts is fixed, the measured efficiency becomes negative at certain frequencies. We examine these reductions in efficiency using an equivalent transmission line model for the reflection method. We also derive analytical expressions for the overall efficiency in the above cases and verify new procedures that enable measurements to be performed without any drops in the measured efficiency.

In order to support driving safety, TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) has been introduced in U.S.A. and Europe. In Japan, the AIRwatch system has been developed and commercialized. Some studies were made to clarify the electric field environment of this system. However, no detailed calculation of the electric field between the transmitter in the tire and the receiving antenna has been published. This paper clarifies the electric field environment of the Japanese system through electromagnetic simulations by a high performance MoM simulator that utilizes the MLFMM scheme. First of all, electric wave emissions from an antenna mounted in a tire are shown to be larger than that of the same antenna in free space. The tire rubber effects are also investigated. Next, electric field distributions on the windshield holding the receiving antenna are calculated. By comparing calculated electric field levels with those in the free space condition, car body interruptions are clarified. Because car body interruptions are not so severe, it is shown that the free space electric field levels can be used as rough design parameters. Moreover, electric field changes due to tire rotation are also clarified. Calculation accuracy is confirmed by the good agreement with measured data collected from a 1/5 scale car model. To permit estimations to be made in actual situations, the effects of the ground are also investigated. This simulation study introduces a lot of important data useful in TPMS system design.

Recently, a lot of UWB antennas have been reported by many research groups. Most of the reported antennas have omnidirectional radiation characteristics. The disadvantage of using omnidirectional antennas is that the antenna performance can be degraded by adjacent walls or metals. If unidirectional UWB antennas are utilized, the degradation on the antenna performance due to omnidirectionality can be avoided. Another important topic in UWB antennas is the waveform distortion caused by antennas' transmission characteristics. In impulse-based UWB communications, waveform distortions of transmitted and received pulses caused by antennas deteriorate the communication performance. Therefore, the development of UWB antennas having small waveform distortions is highly desirable. In this paper, we propose a novel bowtie antenna using leaf-shaped radiating elements and a flat reflector. This antenna has unidirectional radiation patterns over the frequency range of 3.0 to 10.5 GHz. The actual gain in the maximum radiation direction is 6.0-9.0 dBi in the frequency range of 4.5-9.4 GHz (relative bandwidth of 71%). The cross-correlations between source pulse and received pulse waveforms are 0.89-0.94, and hence the waveform distortion caused by this antenna is relatively small. As a result, the proposed antenna is useful for impulse-based UWB communication systems using correlation detection.

This paper proposes the P-1 radiation model for the calculation of low voltage arc plasma. The influence of both emission and self-absorption are taken into account in this model. Based on the couple of electric field, magnetic field, flow field and thermal field, a three-dimensional arc chamber model is constructed and its radiation energy is calculated by the P-1 model with the spectrum divided into six bands. From the obtained distributions of temperature, incident radiation intensity, plasma velocity and current density by P-1 model, it is observed that temperature is obviously different from the result by net emission coefficient (NEC) method in the low temperature region. Arc column edges near the arc root also absorb radiation energy. Furthermore, compared with the result by NEC method, the arc column voltage calculated by P-1 model is lower and more close to the experimental result.

To clarify the mechanism of the generation of electromagnetic (EM) noise, current and radiation noise up to the GHz band generated by slowly breaking silver-compound contacts were investigated experimentally. The current and radiation noise at the GHz band were observed. It was demonstrated that the frequency spectrums of the current and radiation noise correspond to the frequency responses of the circuit admittance and radiation efficiency of the experimental setup, respectively. It was revealed that even if current noise at the GHz band is very small, it can cause a large EM radiation noise because of the high radiation efficiency. From the time-frequency domain characteristics of current noise, it was clarified that the peaks of current noise at 10 MHz band arise immediately after the initiation of the arc discharge and the transition from metallic phase to gaseous phase. On the other hand, the peak current noise above 100 MHz arises immediately after the initiation of the arc discharge.

The peak SAR values of two-element array antennas for mobile handsets in the vicinity of a spherical phantom of a human head are evaluated numerically as a function of the distance between the array antenna and the head phantom when the two elements of a two-element array antenna are either co-phase voltage-fed or reverse-phase voltage-fed. It is found that relation between the worst case of the SAR and the phase difference of array elements strongly depends on the distance. When part of the head phantom is located in the reactive near-field region of the array antenna, although the co-phase feed SAR value is slightly smaller than the reverse-phase feed SAR value, the SAR value is practically independent of the phase difference, but when the head is completely outside the reactive near-field region, the co-phase feed SAR value is larger than the reverse-phase feed SAR value.
