  • MPEG-2 Streaming Protection Scheme for Digital Rights Management

    In this paper, we propose an MPEG-2 TS encryption and decryption scheme which can support MPEG-2 TS streaming, and a key management scheme which can provide secure delivery of the key used to encrypt MPEG-2 TS from the package server to DRM clients in a secure manner. The key management scheme protects the key not only from purchasers but also among the other principals who manage the distribution servers and license servers. The proposed scheme can protect from attacks over a network since a pre-encrypted MPEG-2 TS is sent by a streaming server and only DRM clients can decrypt the streamed MPEG-2 TS. An MPEG-2 TS streaming server can send the encrypted stream without modifying it and degrading its performance because MPEG-2 TS is encrypted but compliant to the MPEG-2 TS format. The processing time to decrypt a streamed MPEG-2 TS in client systems is minimized to guarantee the quality of streaming.

    The effects of air-intake format of forced-air-cooled equipment on the efficiency of air conditioning systems are studied. A modern data center features a large number of information-processing devices to provide telecommunication services. These devices generate considerable heat, and the equipment that houses these devices often employs "forced air cooling" in which a cooling effect is achieved by sucking in large amounts of room air. An air conditioning system used for a machine room filled with such equipment therefore requires high fan driving power resulting in significantly low air conditioning efficiency. In this study, we first performed mockup-based experiments to obtain a quantitative understanding of how different air-intake formats for equipment affect the temperature at various room locations such as equipment intake. We then created a model for predicting the temperature at various locations, and on the basis of this model, we analyzed the factors affecting intake temperature and examined how intake temperature affects air conditioning efficiency. It was found that placing air inlets in the lower 1/3 portion of forced-air-cooled equipment could prevent the equipment from reabsorbing the hot air that it blows out and therefore improve air conditioning efficiency.

    Charge carrier generation, transport, and exciton diffusion in f ac tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) Ir(ppy)3 doped in 4,4'-N,N'-dicarbazole-biphenel (CBP) thin films, an emissive layer of green electrophosphorescent devices, have been studied in terms of time-of-flight (TOF) transient photocurrent, steady-state photocurrent and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. It is found that the excitation energy rapidly transfer from CBP to Ir(ppy)3, and that the charge carriers are generated on Ir(ppy)3 sites. With increasing Ir(ppy)3 concentration, the electron drift mobility is slightly decreased, while the hole transit signals become unobservable. The electron and hole transport properties of Ir(ppy)3 doped CBP thin films result from the energy levels of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and the highest occupied molecular orbital of Ir(ppy)3 with respect to those of CBP. From steady-state photocurrent measurement, the diffusion lengths of 3.5% and 7.0% Ir(ppy)3 doped CBP thin films are determined to be 21 nm and 50 nm, respectively.

  • Radiation Pattern Synthesis of a Lens Horn Antenna

    In order to achieve a transponder antenna for intersection collision avoidance systems in Intelligent Transport Systems, a lens horn antenna that generates a cosecant squared beam is developed. This paper clarifies the method for designing the antenna to achieve accurate radiation pattern synthesis. A H-plane sectral horn is selected. The ray tracing method is employed in the design of the lens shape. The aperture of the horn is determined to be seven wavelengths based on a comparison of calculated radiation patterns and the desired cosecant squared beam shape. Accurate electrical performance, such as radiation patterns and electrical fields in the horn, is calculated using Finite Difference Time Domain software. Electrical field disturbances caused by reflected waves at the lens surfaces expanded widely inside the small horn. As a result, sidelobe levels of the radiation patterns are increased. In order to eliminate these disturbances, matching layers are attached to the shaped lens surface. Then, electrical field distributions in the horn are recovered and disturbances disappear. Measured radiation patterns become almost the same as that designed using the ray tracing method. The results show that application of the ray tracing method to radiation pattern synthesis of a small lens horn antenna is effective. We clarify the electrical field disturbances caused by reflections at the lens surfaces and show that eliminating the reflection at the lens surface by attaching matching layers is very important to achieving radiation pattern synthesis.

    Recently, mobile SCTP (mSCTP) has been proposed as a transport layer approach for supporting mobility. mSCTP is based on the 'multi-homing' feature of Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP), and utilizes the functions to dynamically add or delete IP addresses of end points to or from the existing connection in order to support mobility. In this paper, we propose a transport layer mobility supporting scheme, which is based on mSCTP and utilizes the link layer signal strength information in order to determine when to add or delete end-point IP addresses of mobile node and how to change data delivery paths when handover happens. Exploiting the fact that the transport layer is aware of the mobility in the proposed scheme, we also propose error and congestion control enhancement to cope with handover efficiently. The simulation results show that the performance of proposed scheme is competitive compared to the traditional network layer mobility supporting approach. Especially, when the moving speed of mobile node is fast or new path acquisition takes long, it shows better performance than the traditional network layer approach.

    Current IP network has become the dominant paradigm for all networking environments. The significant cause of packet losses in such heterogenous networks is no longer limited to network congestion. Traditional TCP interprets every packet loss as caused by congestion which may be not the case in the current Internet. Misinterpretation of wireless random loss as an indication of network congestion results in TCP slowing down its sending rate unnecessarily. In this paper, we propose a new variant of TCP Vegas named RedVegas. By using the innate nature of Vegas and congestion indications marked by routers, RedVegas may detect random packet losses precisely. Through the packet loss differentiation, RedVegas reacts appropriately to the losses, and therefore the throughput of connection over heterogeneous networks can be significantly improved.

    In this paper, we propose a new content delivery platform on the ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) road-vehicle communication system on the basis of ROF (Radio over Fiber). The platform is strongly motivated by the ROF communication system capabilities of (1) broadband access, (2) integrated multiple service transmission interface, and (3) simultaneous use of a single and downsized vehicle terminal shared among multiple services based on a multi-mode software radio system. Content is delivered on per reservation basis, as is carefully envisaged as a primary service which is subjected to immaturity of early ITS road-vehicle communication systems, and is provided in limited service areas such as parking on main highways. After the reservation, requested content is stored in a cache connected to a ROF local station via optical fiber. At the designated time, the content is delivered from the cache to a target terminal by way of the ROF local station at high-speed. It can also be done by moving the content from the cache to another cache depending on the target terminal location in a flexible and reliable manner, even if the target terminal could not reach the place at the time designated in the reservation. Such flexibility and reliability are required for consequent practical application, and are provided using information given in the reservations. We implement a preliminary system to evaluate the proposed platform from the viewpoints of (1) processing time from logging into the system for a reservation to delivering content to the target terminal and (2) amount of control traffic required for the delivery. The results show that the proposed platform in which content is delivered from a cache connected with a ROF local station distributed geographically is effective. We also evaluate content delivery throughput using the system connected with an actual ROF local station, and show that the effective throughput is 40 Mbps and the proposed platform is a promising ITS service platform. The paper concludes by discussing future study toward realizing a more promising and practical system.

    A Cyclotron Wave Converter, having decreased magnetic intensity is discussed. Two microwave cavities with uniform and quadruple (or six-pole) electric field in the gap of interaction are used to transform microwave power into the kinetic power of the electron beam fast cyclotron wave. As a result of it, magnetic flux density occurs in two (or three) times lower. The latter is very important to create a compact, powerful and efficient microwave/DC power converters operating at different frequencies including short centimetric and long millimetric wavebands.

    The validity and capability of an iterative coupling scheme between single-particle frozen-field Monte Carlo simulations and nonlinear Poisson solutions for achieving self-consistency is investigated. For this purpose, a realistic 0.1 µm lightly-doped-drain (LDD) n-MOSFET with a maximum doping level of about 2.5 1020 cm-3 is simulated. It is found that taking the drift-diffusion (DD) or the hydrodynamic (HD) model as initial simulation leads to the same Monte Carlo result for the drain current. This shows that different electron densities taken either from a DD or a HD simulation in the bulk region, which is never visited by Monte Carlo electrons, have a negligible influence on the solution of the Poisson equation. For the device investigated about ten iterations are necessary to reach the stationary state after which gathering of cumulative averages can begin. Together with the absence of stability problems at high doping levels this makes the self-consistent single-particle approach (SPARTA) a robust and efficient method for the simulation of nanoscale MOSFETs where quasi-ballistic transport is crucial for the on-current.

    We use the Monte Carlo method to simulate electron transport in a zig-zag single-walled carbon nanotube with a wrapping index of n=10. Results show large low-field mobility, negative differential mobility, and large peaks in the drift velocity reaching 3.5107 cm/s.

    We investigated the electrical properties of hole transport materials such as TPD, α-NPD and m-MTDATA using in-situ field effect measurement. TPD, α-NPD and m-MTDATA films showed p-type semiconducting properties, and their electrical parameters such as conductivity, carrier mobility and carrier concentration were obtained. We also examined the effect of the substrate temperature during vacuum deposition and the thermal treatment after deposition, on the electrical parameters of the films. Experimental results showed that conductivity and carrier mobility decreased as the substrate temperature increased over the glass transition temperature. These decreases in conductivity and carrier mobility as a result of thermal treatment appear to be strongly related to the degradation mechanism of organic electroluminescent devices.

  • A Linear Relaxation for Hub Network Design Problems

    In this paper, we consider a network design problem with hub-and-spoke structure. We propose a relaxation technique for the problem where the location of hub nodes is given and decides the allocation of non-hub nodes to one of the hub nodes. We linearize the non-convex quadratic objective function of the original problem, introducing Hitchcock transportation problems defined for each pair of non-hub nodes. We provide two linear relaxation problems, one based on the Hitchcock transportation problems and the other on the dual Hitchcock transportation problems. We show the tightness of the lower bounds obtained by our formulations by computational experiences.

    As a center of mobile multimedia of the 21st century, it is very much looking forward to explosion of R&D and business of the next generation of mobile communication systems and the ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) because ITS will enable information-oriented in the field of the road, traffic and vehicles, by using the most advanced technologies of mobile communications and devices, for the various purposes such as decrease of the traffic accident, the reduction of traffic jam, the increase in efficiency of the logistics and the harmony with the earth environment. This invited paper will first briefly introduce evolution of mobile communications and ITS in ministries, industries and academia in Japan. Then core communication technologies for ITS will be overviewed such as spread spectrum CDMA, adaptive antenna array, and software radio or software defined radio. Demands of SoC (System on a Chip) to carry out the core technologies will be addressed.

    An InGaP/GaAs composite channel has been proposed in order to improve the electron transport properties of InGaP for high power device applications. The electron mobility and velocity are increased due to the contribution of high mobility GaAs. Although the composite channel FET shows higher transconductance and drain current than those of the InGaP single channel FET, the breakdown voltage is nearly the same. The composite channel FET delivered output power of 0.6 W/mm with power added efficiency of 46.2% under 17 V operation at 1.9 GHz.

    CRL (Communications Research Laboratory, Independent Administrative Institution Japan) is developing a road to vehicle multiple-service communication system based on RoF (Radio over Fiber) technology in a millimeter-wave frequency region of 36-37 GHz. In the experimental system, vehicle can receive three wireless services such as PHS (Personal Handy-phone System), ETC (Electronic Toll Collection system), SB (Satellite Broadcasting). In this paper, the system concept and experimental system configuration are introduced. Furthermore, SDR (Software Defined Radio) mobile terminal technology is mentioned and a new concept for a next generation mobile communication network system based on RoF is proposed.

    This paper presents the characterization and validation of a time-domain physical model for illuminated high-frequency active devices and shows the possibility of use of the electromagnetic analysis of FDTD not only for electromagnetic interaction and scattering but also for the device simulation as a good candidate for a microwave simulator. The model is based on Boltzmann's Transport Equation, which accurately accounts for carrier transport in microwave and millimeter wave devices with sub-micrometer gate lengths. Illumination effects are accommodated in the model to represent carrier density changes inside the illuminated device. The simulation results are compared to available experimental records for a typical MESFET for validation purposes. Simulation results show that the microscopic as well as the macroscopic characteristics of the active device are altered by the light energy. This fact makes the model an important tool for the active device design method under illumination control.

  • Red EL Properties of OLED Having Hole Blocking Layer

    In this study, we prepared red organic light- emitting-diode (OLED) with a fluorescent dye(Sq)-doped and inserted 1,3-bis (5-p-t-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl) benzene (OXD7) or/and tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) layers between emission layer and cathode in order to increase electroluminescent (EL) efficiency. This inserting effect has been observed and EL mechanism characteristics have been examined. The hole transport layer was N,N'-diphenyl-N, N'bis-(3-methylphenyl)-1,1'diphenyl-4,4'-diamine (TPD); the host material of emission layer was Alq3; the guest material of emission layer was Sq. When Alq3 was inserted between the emission layer and the cathode, emission efficiency increased. Highly pure red emission, however, was not attaina ble with Alq3. On the other hand, the insertion of OXD7 between the two layers blocked and accumulated holes. Because of its increasing recombination probability of electron and hole, luminance characteristics and emission efficiency were improved with holding highly pure red color.

  • An Effective Data Transmission Control Method for Mobile Terminals in Spot Communication Systems

    Mobile computing networks make it possible to offer information access to mobile users. In order to transfer data over mobile networks efficiently, appropriate data transmission control methods for mobile terminals must be established. This paper focuses on spot communication systems to transmit data at high speeds between base stations and mobile terminals. It proposes a flexible and efficient data transmission method that is suitable for spot communication systems. The proposed method transfers subsets of the data to the base stations that are best sited relative to the mobile terminal. This helps to reduce the traffic load of the network significantly. Simulation results confirm the validity of the proposed method. Furthermore, the data receiving time of the mobile terminal, which is an important measure in evaluating the Quality of Service (QoS) for data transmission is analyzed. The result shows that the traffic load in the network is reduced significantly while the QoS is well maintained.

    The ATM Virtual Path(VP)-based transport network is a candidate for the future multi-reliability and broadband integrated service infrastructure. This paper compares the performance attributes of the VP transport network with those of the conventional SDH network and future optical path-based transport network. This paper shows that the VP-based network is superior in terms of path-grooming efficiency and connection capability, and will still play an important role when WDM technologies are introduced to carrier networks. This paper also describes the recently fabricated VP Cross Connect(VP-XC) system configuration and the VP Automatic Protection Switching(APS) performance of the XC.

    This paper describes the roles and benefits of an ATM transport network composed of ATM transport systems, such as ATM cross-connect systems and/or ATM add-drop multiplexers. The ATM transport network is an economical way of providing the ATM public network and a virtual path service for enterprise users. This paper exemplifies the effectiveness of a VP grooming function in the ATM transport system by comparing it to the network costs with direct fiber connection, an alternative to VP grooming. Main and junction module architecture for the ATM cross-connect system is proposed to realize an economical network that supports small to large traffic. For implementing a large-scale cross-connect switch, a cell congestion control method that employs re-arrangement control and a concentration network is proposed. Implementation of multiple service classes and VP protection switching in the ATM cross-connect system are mentioned. We also describe an SDH signal transmission method based on ATM cells, that offers a cost effective and reliable transport network.
