In this article, a new Beamforming Network (BFN) realized in Broadside Coupled Stripline (BCS) is proposed to feed 1×4 and 2×2 arrays antenna at 28 GHZ-Band. The new BFN is composed only of couplers and phase shifters. It doesn't require any crossover compared to the conventional Butler Matrix (BM) which requires two crossovers. The tight coupling and low loss characteristics of the BCS allow a design of a compact and wideband BFN. The new BFN produces the phase differences of (±90°) and (±45°, ±135°) respectively in x- and y-directions. Its integration with a 1×4 linear array antenna reduces the array area by 70% with an improvement of the gain performance compared with the conventional array. The integration with a 2×2 array allows the realization of a full 2-D beam scanning. The proposed concept has been verified experimentally by measuring the fabricated prototypes of the BFN, the 1-D and 2-D patch arrays antennas. The measured 11.5 dBi and 11.3 dBi maximum gains are realized in θ0 = 14° and (θ0, φ0) = (45°,345°) directions respectively for the 1-D and 2-D patch arrays. The physical area of the fabricated BFN is only (0.37λ0×0.3λ0×0.08λ0), while the 1-D array and 2-D array antennas areas without feeding transmission lines are respectively (0.5λ0×2.15λ0×0.08λ0) and (0.9λ0×0.8λ0×0.08λ0).

A 2-D beam scanning array antenna fed by a compact 16-way 2-D beamforming network (BFN) designed in Broadside Coupled Stripline (BCS) is addressed. The proposed 16-way 2-D BFN is formed by interconnecting two groups of 4x4 Butler Matrix (BM). Each group is composed of four compact 4x4 BMs. The critical point of the design is to propose a simple and compact 4x4 BM without crossover in BCS to achieve a better transmission coefficient of the 16-way 2-D BFN with reduced size of merely 0.8λ0×0.8λ0×0.04λ0. Moreover, the complexity of the interface connection between the 2-D BFN and the 4x4 patch array antenna is reduced by using probe feeding. The 16-way 2-D BFN is able to produce the phase shift of ±45°, and ±135° in x- and y- directions. The 2-D BFN is easily integrated under the 4x4 patch array to form a 2-D phased array capable of switching 16 beams in both elevation and azimuth directions. The area of the proposed 2-D beam scanning array antenna module has been significantly reduced to 2λ0×2λ0×0.04λ0. A prototype operating in the frequency range of 4-6GHz is fabricated and measured to validate the concept. The measurement results agree well with the simulations.

To enhance safety and efficiency in the traffic environment, developing intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) is of paramount importance. In ITSs, roadside units (RSUs) are critical components that enable the environment awareness and connectivity via using radar sensing and communications. In this paper, we focus on RSUs with multiple radar systems. Specifically, we propose a parameter selection method of multiple radar systems to enhance the overall sensing performance. Furthermore, since different radars provide different sensing and tracking results, to benefit from multiple radars, we propose fusion algorithms to integrate the tracking results of different radars. We use two commercial frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radars to conduct experiments at Hsinchu city in Taiwan. The experimental results validate that our proposed approaches can improve the overall sensing performance.

Many modern regular expression engines employ various extensions to give more expressive support for real-world usages. Among the major extensions employed by many of the modern regular expression engines are backreferences and lookaheads. A question of interest about these extended regular expressions is their expressive power. Previous works have shown that (i) the extension by lookaheads does not enhance the expressive power, i.e., the expressive power of regular expressions with lookaheads is still regular, and that (ii) the extension by backreferences enhances the expressive power, i.e., the expressive power of regular expressions with backreferences (abbreviated as rewb) is no longer regular. This raises the following natural question: Does the extension of regular expressions with backreferences by lookaheads enhance the expressive power of regular expressions with backreferences? This paper answers the question positively by proving that adding either positive lookaheads or negative lookaheads increases the expressive power of rewb (the former abbreviated as rewblp and the latter as rewbln). A consequence of our result is that neither the class of finite state automata nor that of memory automata (MFA) of Schmid[2] (which corresponds to regular expressions with backreferenes but without lookaheads) corresponds to rewblp or rewbln. To fill the void, as a first step toward building such automata, we propose a new class of automata called memory automata with positive lookaheads (PLMFA) that corresponds to rewblp. The key idea of PLMFA is to extend MFA with a new kind of memories, called positive-lookahead memory, that is used to simulate the backtracking behavior of positive lookaheads. Interestingly, our positive-lookahead memories are almost perfectly symmetric to the capturing-group memories of MFA. Therefore, our PLMFA can be seen as a natural extension of MFA that can be obtained independently of its original intended purpose of simulating rewblp.

To enhance the emotion feature and improve the performance of speech emotion recognition, an attention mechanism is employed to recognize the important information in both time and feature dimensions. In the time dimension, multi-heads attention is modified with the last state of the long short-term memory (LSTM)'s output to match the time accumulation characteristic of LSTM. In the feature dimension, scaled dot-product attention is replaced with additive attention that refers to the method of the state update of LSTM to construct multi-heads attention. This means that a nonlinear change replaces the linear mapping in classical multi-heads attention. Experiments on IEMOCAP datasets demonstrate that the attention mechanism could enhance emotional information and improve the performance of speech emotion recognition.

Intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) have been extensively studied in recent years to improve the safety and efficiency of transportation. The use of a radar system to enable the ITSs monitor the environment is robust to weather conditions and is less invasive to user privacy. Moreover, equipping the roadside units (RSUs) with radar modules has been deemed an economical and efficient option for ITS operators. However, because the detection and tracking parameters can significantly influence the radar system performance and the best parameters for different scenarios are different, the selection of appropriate parameters for the radar systems is critical. In this study, we investigated radar parameter selection and consequently proposes a parameter selection approach capable of automatically choosing the appropriate detection and tracking parameters for radar systems. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method realizes appropriate selection of parameters, thereby significantly improving the detection and tracking performance of radar systems.

Optimal loads and maximum achievable efficiency for multiple-receiver inductive power transfer (IPT) system have been formulated by theoretical studies in literatures. This paper presents extended analysis on system behavior at optimal load condition and extensive S-parameter evaluation to validate the formulas. Our results confirm that at the optimal load condition, the system is in a resonance state; the impact of cross-coupling among receivers is completely mitigated; and the efficiency reaches its maximum expressed by an efficiency angle tangent, in an manner analogous to the well-known kQ-theory for single-receiver IPT. Our contributions do not lie in practical applications of multiple-receiver IPT but in establishing principles for design and benchmarking the system.

As the capabilities and costs of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and of sensors (IoT) continue to improve, the concept of a “control system” can evolve beyond the operation of a discrete technical system based on numerical information and enter the realm of large-scale systems with both technical and social characteristics based on both numerical and unstructured information. This evolution has particular significance for applying the principles of Autonomous Decentralised Systems (ADS) [1]. This article considers the possible roles for ADS in complex technical and social systems extending up to global scales.

Erasure codes have been considered as one of the most promising techniques for data reliability enhancement and storage efficiency in modern distributed storage systems. However, erasure codes often suffer from a time-consuming coding process which makes them nearly impractical. The opportunity to solve this problem probably rely on the parallelization of erasure-code-based application on the modern multi-/many-core processors to fully take advantage of the adequate hardware resources on those platforms. However, the complicated data allocation and limited I/O throughput pose a great challenge on the parallelization. To address this challenge, we propose a general multi-threaded parallel coding approach in this work. The approach consists of a general multi-threaded parallel coding model named as MTPerasure, and two detailed parallel coding algorithms, named as sdaParallel and ddaParallel, respectively, adapting to different I/O circumstances. MTPerasure is a general parallel coding model focusing on the high level data allocation, and it is applicable for all erasure codes and can be implemented without any modifications of the low level coding algorithms. The sdaParallel divides the data into several parts and the data parts are allocated to different threads statically in order to eliminate synchronization latency among multiple threads, which improves the parallel coding performance under the dummy I/O mode. The ddaParallel employs two threads to execute the I/O reading and writing on the basis of small pieces independently, which increases the I/O throughput. Furthermore, the data pieces are assigned to the coding thread dynamically. A special thread scheduling algorithm is also proposed to reduce thread migration latency. To evaluate our proposal, we parallelize the popular open source library jerasure based on our approach. And a detailed performance comparison with the original sequential coding program indicates that the proposed parallel approach outperforms the original sequential program by an extraordinary speedups from 1.4x up to 7x, and achieves better utilization of the computation and I/O resources.

A study on quantification of human stress using low beta waves of electroencephalography (EEG) is presented. For the very first time the importance of low beta waves as a feature for quantification of human stress is highlighted. In this study, there were twenty-eight participants who filled the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) questionnaire and recorded their EEG in closed eye condition by using a commercially available single channel EEG headset placed at frontal site. On the regression analysis of beta waves extracted from recorded EEG, it has been observed that low beta waves can predict PSS scores with a confidence level of 94%. Consequently, when low beta wave is used as a feature with the Naive Bayes algorithm for classification of stress level, it not only reduces the computational cost by 7 folds but also improves the accuracy to 71.4%.

In accordance with Moore's law, recent design issues include shortening of time-to-market and detection of delay faults. Several studies with respect to formal techniques have examined the first issue. Using the equivalence checking, it is possible to identify whether large circuits are equivalent or not in a practical time frame. With respect to the latter issue, it is difficult to achieve 100% fault efficiency even for transition faults in full scan designs. This study involved proposing a redundant transition fault identification method using equivalence checking. The main concept of the proposed algorithm involved combining the following two known techniques, 1. modeling of a transition fault as a stuck-at fault with temporal expansion and 2. detection of a stuck-at fault by using equivalence checking tools. The experimental results indicated that the proposed redundant identification method using a formal approach achieved 100% fault efficiency for all benchmark circuits in a practical time even if a commercial ATPG tool was unable to achieve 100% fault efficiency for several circuits.

Wireless LAN (WLAN) roaming systems, such as eduroam, enable the mutual use of WLAN facilities among multiple organizations. As a consequence of the strong demand for WLAN roaming, it is utilized not only at universities and schools but also at the venues of large events such as concerts, conferences, and sports events. Moreover, it has also been reported that WLAN roaming is useful in areas afflicted by natural disasters. This paper presents a novel WLAN roaming system over Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) that is useful for the use cases shown above. The proposed system is based on two methods as follows: 1) Automatic authentication path generation method decreases the WLAN roaming system deployment costs including the wiring cost and configuration cost. Although the wiring cost can be reduced by using WMN technologies, some additional configurations are still required if we want to deploy a secure user authentication mechanism (e.g. IEEE 802.1X) on WLAN systems. In the proposed system, the Access Points (APs) can act as authenticators automatically using RadSec instead of RADIUS. Therefore, the network administrators can deploy 802.1X-based authentication systems over WMNs without additional configurations on-site. 2) Local authentication method makes the system deployable in times of natural disasters, in particular when the upper network is unavailable or some authentication servers or proxies are down. In the local authentication method, users and APs can be authenticated at the WMN by locally verifying the digital certificates as the authentication credentials.

The tree-based routing approach has been known as an efficient method for node mobility management and data packet transmission between two long-distance parties; however, its parameter adjustment must balance control overhead against the convergence speed of topology information according to node mobility. Meanwhile, location-based routing works more efficiently when the distance between the source and destination is relatively short. Therefore, this paper proposes a roadside unit (RSU) based hybrid routing protocol, called RSU-HRP that combines the strengths of both protocols while offsetting their weaknesses. In RSU-HRP, the tree construction is modified to take into account the link and route quality to construct a robust and reliable tree against high node mobility, and an optimized broadcast algorithm is developed to reduce control overhead induced by the advertisement message periodically sent from a roadside unit. In addition, the two routing methods are selectively used based on the computed distance in hops between a source and a destination. Simulation results show that RSU-HRP far outperforms TrafRoute in terms of packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay, and control overhead in both Vehicle-to-Infrastructure and Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication models.

Gallium oxide is expected as a channel material for thin film transistors. In the conventional technologies, gallium oxide has been tried to be fabricated by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at high temperatures from 100--450$^{circ}$C, although the room-temperature (RT) growth has not been developed. In this work, we developed the RT ALD of gallium oxide by using a remote plasma technique. We studied trimethylgallium (TMG) adsorption and its oxidization on gallium oxide surfaces at RT by infrared absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). Based on the adsorption and oxidization characteristics, we designed the room temperature ALD of Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$. The IRAS indicated that TMG adsorbs on the gallium oxide surface by consuming the adsorption sites of surface hydroxyl groups even at RT and the remote plasma-excited water and oxygen vapor is effective in oxidizing the TMG adsorbed surface and regeneration of the adsorption sites for TMG. We successfully prepared Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$ films on Si substrates at RT with a growth per cycle of 0.055,nm/cycle.

This paper proposes a novel high-temperature superconducting dual-band bandpass filter (HTS-DBPF), that employs a broadside coupling structure, in which quarter-wavelength resonators are formed on opposite sides of each substrate. This structure provides a dual-band operation of the BPF and flexibility, in the sense of having a wide range in selecting two center passband frequencies of the HTS-DBPF. This paper employs the ratio of the lower and higher center passband frequencies, α, as a criterion for evaluating the flexibility. The obtained α ranges are from 1 to 4.7, which are the widest for DBPFs for mobile communications applications, to the best knowledge of the authors. This paper presents a 2.4-/2.9-GHz band HTS-DBPF, as an experimental example, using a YBCO film deposited on an MgO substrate. The measured frequency responses of the HTS-DBPF agree with the electromagnetic simulated results. Measurement and simulation results confirm that the proposed filter architecture is effective in configuring a DBPF that can set each center passband frequency widely.

Recent advance in digital storage technology has enabled us to archive a large volume of video data. Thanks to this trend, we have archived more than 1,800 hours of video data from a daily Japanese news show in the last ten years. When considering the effective use of such a large news video archive, we assumed that analysis of its chronological and semantic structure becomes important. We also consider that providing the users with the development of news topics is more important to help their understanding of current affairs, rather than providing a list of relevant news stories as in most of the current news video retrieval systems. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a structuring method for a news video archive, together with an interface that visualizes the structure, so that users could track the development of news topics according to their interest, efficiently. The proposed news video structure, namely the “topic thread structure”, is obtained as a result of an analysis of the chronological and semantic relation between news stories. Meanwhile, the proposed interface, namely “mediaWalker II”, allows users to track the development of news topics along the topic thread structure, and at the same time watch the video footage corresponding to each news story. Analyses on the topic thread structures obtained by applying the proposed method to actual news video footages revealed interesting and comprehensible relations between news topics in the real world. At the same time, analyses on their size quantified the efficiency of tracking a user's topic-of-interest based on the proposed topic thread structure. We consider this as a first step towards facilitating video authoring by users based on existing contents in a large-scale news video archive.

This letter proposes a practical scheme that can estimate ADSL link rates. The proposed scheme allows us to estimate ADSL link rates from measurements made at the NOC using existing communications protocols and network node facilities; it imposes no heavy traffic overhead. The proposed scheme consists of two major steps. The first step is to collect measured data of round trip times (RTT) for both long and short packets to find their minimum values of RTTs by sending Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request messages. The second step is to estimate the ADSL down- and up-link rates by using the difference in RTT between long and short packets and the experimentally-obtained correlated relationships between ADSL down- and up-link rates. RTTs are experimentally measured for an IP network, and it is shown that the down- and up-link rates can be obtained in a simple manner.

The air traffic situational awareness is an essential factor for flight safety and efficiency. Today, pilots have only two methods for situational awareness, through visual acquisition or with traffic information via voice messages from Air Traffic Controllers. These methods have limitations in reducing aircraft separation because of their delay in acquiring traffic. To improve the acquisition of traffic information, airborne surveillance with ADS-B/TIS-B has been proposed. This paper reports on the prototype TIS-B system developed by ENRI and on the results of evaluations with flight testing.

With Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) involving in diverse applications, the realistic analysis of energy consumption of a sensor node in an error-prone network environment is emerging as an elementary research issue. In this paper, we introduce a Distributed Communication Model (DCM) that can accurately determine the energy consumption through data communication from source to destination in error-prone network environments. The energy consumption is affected with the quality of link, which is characterized by symmetry, directivity, instability, and irregularity of the communication range of a sensor node. Due to weak communication links, significant packet loss occurs that affects the overall energy consumption. While other models unable to determine energy consumption due to lossy links in error-prone and unstable network environments, DCM can accurately estimate the energy consumption in such situations. We also perform comprehensive analysis of overheads caused by data propagation through multi-hop distributed networks. We validate DCM through both simulations and experiments using MICAz motes. Similarity of the results from energy consumption analysis with both simulations and experimentations shows that DCM is realistic, compared to other models in terms of accuracy and diversity of the environments.
