High Frequency Surface Wave Radar holds significant potential in sea detection. However, the target signals are often surpassed by substantial sea clutter and ionospheric clutter, making it crucial to address clutter suppression and extract weak target signals amidst the strong noise background. This study proposes a novel method for separating weak harmonic target signals based on local tangent space, leveraging the chaotic feature of ionospheric clutter. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through the analysis of measured data, thereby validating its practicality and potential for real-world applications.
Previously a method was reported to determine the mathematical representation of the microwave oscillator admittance by using numerical calculation. When analyzing the load characteristics and synchronization phenomena by using this formula, the analysis results meet with the experimental results. This paper describes a method to determine the mathematical representation manually.

This paper presents an analysis-based design method for designing the class-Φ22 wireless power transfer (WPT) system, taking its subsystems as a whole into account. By using the proposed design method, it is possible to derive accurate design values which can make sure the class-E Zero-Voltage-Switching/Zero-Derivative-Switching (ZVS/ZDS) to obtain without applying any tuning processes. Additionally, it is possible to take the effects of the switch on resistance, diode forward voltage drop, and equivalent series resistances (ESRs) of all passive elements on the system operations into account. Furthermore, design curves for a wide range of parameters are developed and organized as basic data for various applications. The validities of the proposed design procedure and derived design curves are confirmed by LTspice simulation and circuit experiment. In the experimental measurements, the class-Φ22 WPT system achieves 78.8% power-transmission efficiency at 6.78MHz operating frequency and 7.96W output power. Additionally, the results obtained from the LTspice simulation and laboratory experiment show quantitative agreements with the analytical predictions, which indicates the accuracy and validity of the proposed analytical method and design curves given in this paper.

The ionospheric clutter in High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR) is the reflection of electromagnetic waves from the ionosphere back to the receiver, which should be suppressed as much as possible for the primary purpose of target detection in HFSWR. However, ionospheric clutter contains vast quantities of ionospheric state information. By studying ionospheric clutter, some of the relevant ionospheric parameters can be inferred, especially during the period of typhoons, when the ionospheric state changes drastically affected by typhoon-excited gravity waves, and utilizing the time-frequency characteristics of ionospheric clutter at typhoon time, information such as the trend of electron concentration changes in the ionosphere and the direction of the typhoon can be obtained. The results of the processing of the radar data showed the effectiveness of this method.

High gain antennas with narrow-beamforming are required to compensate for the high propagation loss expected in high frequency bands such as the millimeter wave and sub-terahertz wave bands, which are promising for achieving extremely high speeds and capacity. However using narrow-beamforming for initial access (IA) beam search in all directions incurs an excessive overhead. Using wide-beamforming can reduce the overhead for IA but it also shrinks the coverage area due to the lower beamforming gain. Here, it is assumed that there are some situations in which the required coverage distance differs depending on the direction from the antenna. For example, the distance to an floor for a ceiling-mounted antenna varies depending on the direction, and the distance to the obstruction becomes the required coverage distance for an antenna installation design that assumes line-of-sight. In this paper, we propose a novel IA beam search scheme with adaptive beam width control based on the distance to shield obstacles in each direction. Simulations and experiments show that the proposed method reduces the overhead by 20%-50% without shrinking the coverage area in shield environments compared to exhaustive beam search with narrow-beamforming.

High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR) can achieve over-the-horizon detection, which can effectively detect and track the ships and ultra-low altitude aircrafts, as well as the acquisition of sea state information such as icebergs and ocean currents and so on. However, HFSWR is seriously affected by the clutters, especially sea clutter and ionospheric clutter. In this paper, we propose a deep learning image semantic segmentation method based on optimized Deeplabv3+ network to achieve the automatic detection of sea clutter and ionospheric clutter using the measured R-D spectrum images of HFSWR during the typhoon as experimental data, which avoids the disadvantage of traditional detection methods that require a large amount of a priori knowledge and provides a basis for subsequent the clutter suppression or the clutter characteristics research.

A diversity strategy is efficient to reduce the fluctuation of communication quality caused by fading. In order to further maintain the communication quality and improve the communication capacity, this paper proposes a two-dimensional diversity approach by serially-concatenating spectral precoding and power normalized-differential space time block coding (PN-DSTBC). Spectral precoding is able to take benefit from a frequency diversity effect without loss in spectral efficiency. In addition, PN-DSTBC is robust against serious phase noise in an extremely high frequency (EHF) band by exploiting a spatial diversity effect. However, there is a problem that a naive concatenation degrades the performance due to the imbalance of equivalent noise variances over transmit frequencies. Thus, we examine an equalized PN-DSTBC decoder as a modified approach to uniform equivalent noise variances over frequencies. The performance evaluation using computer simulations shows that the proposed modified approach yields the performance improvement at any modulation schemes and at any number of transmit frequencies. Furthermore, in the case of 64QAM and two transmit frequencies, the performance gain of the modified approach is 4dB larger than that of PN-DSTBC only at uncoded BER=10-4.

This paper proposes a radio propagation prediction method that uses point cloud data based on a hybrid of the ray-tracing (RT) method and an effective roughness (ER) model in urban environments for the fifth generation mobile communications system using high frequency bands. The proposed prediction method incorporates propagation characteristics that consider diffuse scattering from surface irregularities. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by comparisons of measurement and prediction results gained from the proposed method and a conventional RT method based on power delay and angular profiles. From predictions based on the power delay and angular profiles, we find that the proposed method, assuming the roughness of σh=1mm, accurately predicts the propagation characteristics in the 20GHz band for urban line-of-sight environments. The prediction error for the delay spread is 2.1ns to 9.7ns in an urban environment.

This paper presents the characteristics of path loss produced by traffic sign blockage. Multi frequency bands including high frequency bands up to 40 GHz are analyzed on the basis of measurement results in urban microcell environments. It is shown that the measured path loss increases compared to free space path loss even on a straight line-of-sight road, and that the excess attenuation is caused by the blockage effects of traffic signs. It is also shown that the measurement area affected by the blockage becomes small as frequency increases. The blocking object occupies the same area for all frequencies, but it takes up a larger portion of the Fresnel Zone as frequency increases. Therefore, if blockage occurs, the excess loss in high frequency bands becomes larger than in low frequency bands. In addition, the validity of two blockage path loss models is verified on the basis of measurement results. The first is the 3GPP blockage model and the second is the proposed blockage model, which is an expanded version of the basic diffraction model in ITU-R P.526. It is shown that these blockage models can predict the path loss increased by the traffic sign blockage and that their root mean square error can be improved compared to that of the 3GPP two slope model and a free space path loss model. The 3GPP blockage model is found to be more accurate for 26.4 and 37.1GHz, while the proposed model is more accurate for 0.8, 2.2, and 4.7GHz. The results show the blockage path loss due to traffic signs is clarified in a wide frequency range, and it is verified that the 3GPP blockage model and the proposed blockage model can accurately predict the blockage path loss.

In order to utilize higher frequency bands above 6GHz, which is an important technical challenge in fifth generation mobile systems, radio propagation channel properties in a large variety of deployment scenarios should be thoroughly investigated. The authors' group has been involved in a fundamental research project aimed at investigating multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) transmission performance and propagation channel properties at microwave frequency above 10GHz from 2009 to 2013, and since then they have been conducting measurement and modeling for high frequency bands. This paper aims at providing comprehensive tutorial of a whole procedure of channel modeling; multi-dimensional channel sounding, propagation channel measurement, analysis, and modeling, by introducing the developed MIMO channel sounders at high frequency bands of 11 and 60GHz and presenting some measurement results in a microcell environment at 11GHz. Furthermore, this paper identifies challenges in radio propagation measurements, and discusses current/future channel modeling issues as future works.

This paper describes analytical results obtained for floor penetration loss characteristics and their frequency dependency by measurements in multiple frequency bands, including those above 6GHz, in an indoor office environment. Measurement and analysis results confirm that the floor penetration loss depends on two dominant components: the transmission path through floors, and the path traveling through the outside building. We also clarify that these dominant paths have different path loss characteristics and frequency dependency. The transmission path through floors rapidly attenuates with large inter-floor offsets and in high frequency bands. On the other hand, the path traveling through outside of the building attenuates monotonically as the frequency increases. Therefore, the transmission path is dominant at short inter-floor offsets and low frequencies, and the path traveling through the outside is dominant at high number of floors or high frequency. Finally, we clarify that the floor penetration loss depends on the frequency dependency of the dominant path on the basis of the path loss characteristics of each dominant path.

Coaxial connectors are extensively used in electrical systems and the degradation of the connector can alter the signal that is being transmitted and leads to faults, which is one of the major causes of low communication quality. In this work, the failure features caused by the degraded connector contact surface were studied. The relationship between the DC resistance and decreased real contact areas was given. Considering the inductance properties and capacitive coupling at high frequencies, the impedance characteristics of the degraded connector were discussed. Based on the transmission line theory and experimental measurement, an equivalent lump circuit of the coaxial connector was developed. For the degraded contact surface, the capacitance was analyzed, and the frequency effect was investigated. According to the high frequency characteristics of the degraded connector, a fault detection and location method for coaxial connectors in RF system was developed using a neural network method. For connectors suffering from different levels of pollution, their impedance modulus varies continuously. Considering the range of the connector's impedance parameters, the fault modes were determined. Based on the scattering parameter simulation of a RF receiver front-end circuit, the S11 and S21 parameters were obtained as feature parameters and Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to generate training and testing samples. Based on the BP neural network algorithm, the fault modes were classified and the results show the diagnosis accuracy was 97.33%.

This paper proposed that a path loss model for outdoor-to-indoor corridor is presented to construct next generation mobile communication systems. The proposed model covers the frequency range of millimeter wave bands up to 40GHz and provides three dimensional incident angle characteristics. Analysis of path loss characteristics is conducted by ray tracing. We clarify that the paths reflected multiple times between the external walls of buildings and then diffracted into one of the buildings are dominant. Moreover, we also clarify how the paths affect the path loss dependence on frequency and three dimensional incident angle. Therefore, by taking these dependencies into consideration, the proposed model decreases the root mean square errors of prediction results to within about 2 to 6dB in bands up to 40GHz.

In this paper, we propose a simple model for estimating the effects of human body shadowing (HBS) in high frequency bands. The model includes two factors: the shadowing width (SW), which is the width of the area with shadowing loss values greater than 0dB, and the median shadowing loss value (MSLV), which is obtained by taking the median of the shadowing loss values within the SW. These factors are determined by formulas using parameters, i.e. frequency, distance between the base station (BS) and human body, distance between the terminal and human body, BS antenna height, and direction of the human body. To obtain the formulas, a method for calculating the effects of HBS based on the uniform theory of diffraction (UTD) and a human body model comprising lossy dielectric flat plates is proposed and verified. Then, the general forms of the formulas are predicted using the theory of knife-edge diffraction (KE). A series of computer simulations using the proposed calculation method with random changes in parameters is conducted to verify the general formulas and derive coefficients for these formulas through regression formulas.

This letter presents the ideas and methods of the winning solution* for the Kaggle Algorithmic Trading Challenge. This analysis challenge took place between 11th November 2011 and 8th January 2012, and 264 competitors submitted solutions. The objective of this competition was to develop empirical predictive models to explain stock market prices following a liquidity shock. The winning system builds upon the optimal composition of several models and a feature extraction and selection strategy. We used Random Forest as a modeling technique to train all sub-models as a function of an optimal feature set. The modeling approach can cope with highly complex data having low Maximal Information Coefficients between the dependent variable and the feature set and provides a feature ranking metric which we used in our feature selection algorithm.

This paper proposes a high frequency resolution Digitally-Controlled Oscillator (DCO) using a single-period control bit switching scheme. The proposed scheme controls the tuning word of DCO in a single period for the fine frequency tuning. The LC type DCO is implemented to realize the proposed scheme, and is fabricated using a standard 65 nm CMOS technology. The measurement results show that the implemented DCO improves the frequency resolution from 560 kHz to 180 kHz without phase noise degradation with an additional area of 200 µm2.

Reduction of the intensity noise in semiconductor lasers is an important subject for the higher performance of an application. Simultaneous usage of the superposition of high frequency current and the electric negative feedback loop was proposed to suppress the noise for the higher power operation of semiconductor lasers. Effective noise reduction of more than 25 dB with 80 mW operation was experimentally demonstrated.
A high-efficiency CMOS rectifier circuit for UHF RFID applications was developed. The rectifier utilizes a self-Vth-cancellation (SVC) scheme in which the threshold voltage of MOSFETs is cancelled by applying gate bias voltage generated from the output voltage of the rectifier itself. A very simple circuit configuration and zero power dissipation characteristics in biasing enable excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE), especially under small RF input power conditions. At higher RF input power conditions, the PCE of the rectifier automatically decreases. This is the built-in self-power-regulation function. The proposed SVC CMOS rectifier was fabricated with a 0.35-µm CMOS process and the measured performance was compared with those of conventional nMOS, pMOS, and CMOS rectifiers and other types of Vth cancellation rectifiers as well. The SVC CMOS rectifier achieves 32% of PCE at the -10 dBm RF input power condition. This PCE is larger than rectifiers reported to date under this condition.

As THz wave has the advantages of enough resolution and penetration to materials, it has been examined to be used for the imaging system. The propagation distance of THz wave is limited to be short. That is also the advantage for application to the indoor wireless communication etc. For the achievement of the ultra-high frequency oscillator (and concurrently transmitter) device, the properties of small, electronic excitation, the antenna constructed and being on the wafer are important. For the purpose, the Negative differential resistance Dual channel transistor (NDR-DCT) proposed by AIST is utilized. In this paper, as an initial theoretical analysis, we simulated the oscillation frequency of this device at about 100 GHz-1THz within the Terahertz band on which the above applications was expected. The equivalent circuit model of NDR-DCT was shown based on the analogy with the resonant tunnelling diode (RTDs), and the antenna as the resonance circuit part was designed by the numerical analysis. The possibility of the THz oscillation of this device was confirmed. The slit reflector that we proposed can realize the slot antenna on the device effectively and is suitable for three terminal structure semiconductor. its manufacturing is relatively easy.
