Two computational-geometric approaches to linear programming are surveyed. One is based on the prune-and-search paradigm and the other utilizes randomization. These two techniques are quite useful to solve geometric problems efficiently, and have many other applications, some of which are also mentioned.
This paper discusses a formulation of a basic theory of the information systems, where information is not only transmitted, but is also processed and memorized during the transmission. A deterministic procedure applied by an information system is defined as a logical work, and two measurements with information X, information quantity I(X) and information vitality T(X), are introduced. A system with the ability of transmitting, processing and memorizing information is called an information engine. A system of interconnected information engines is called an information network. The power of an information engine is defined as the maximum capacity of the logical works performed by the engine, and important properties of total power of information network are derived. Response time characteristics and cost minimizing problems of an information network are also discussed.

In this paper, two models for associative memory based on a measure of manhattan length are proposed. First, we propose the two-layered model which has an advantage to its implementation by using PDN. We also refer to the way to improve the recalling ability of this model against noisy input patterns. Secondly, we propose the other model which always recalls the nearest memory pattern in a measure of manhattan length by lateral inhibition. Even if a noise of input pattern is so large that the first model can not recall, this model can recall correctly against such a noisy pattern. We also confirm the performance of the two models by computer simulations.

This article analyzes the property of the fully interconnected neural networks as a method of solving combinatorial optimization problems in general. In particular, in order to escape local minimums in this model, we analyze theoretically the relation between the diagonal elements of the connection matrix and the stability of the networks. It is shown that the position of the global minimum point of the energy function on the hyper sphere in n dimensional space is given by the eigen vector corresponding the maximum eigen value of the connection matrix. Then it is shown that the diagonal elements of the connection matrix can be improved without loss of generality. The equilibrium points of the improved networks are classified according to their properties, and their stability is investigated. In order to show that the change of the diagonal elements improves the potential for the global minimum search, computer simulations are carried out by using the theoretical values. In according to the simulation result on 10 neurons, the success rate to get the optimum solution is 97.5%. The result shows that the improvement of the diagonal elements has potential for minimum search.

This paper describes a mixed mode circuit simulation by the direct and relaxation-based methods with dynamic network partitioning. For the efficient circuit simulation by the direct method, the algorithms with circuit partitioning and latency technique have been studied. Recently, the hierarchical decomposition and latency and their validities have been researched. Network tearing techniques enable independent analysis of each subnetwork except for the local datum nodes. Therefore, if the local datum nodes are also torn, each subnetwork is separated entirely. Since the network separation is based on relaxation approach, the implementation of the separation technique in the circuit simulation by the direct method corresponds to performing the mixed mode simulation by the direct and relaxation-based methods. In this paper, a dynamic "network separation" technique based on the tightness of the coupling between subnetworks is suggested. Then, by the introduction of dynamic network separation into the simulator SPLIT with hierarchical decomposition and latency, the mixed mode circuit simulator, which selects the direct method or the relaxation method and determines the block size of the latent circuit dynamically and suitably, is constructed.

Global dynamic behavior particularly the bifurcation of periodic orbits of a parallel blower system is studied using a piecewise linear model and the one-dimensional map defined by the Poincare map. First several analytical tools are presented to numerically study the bifurcation process particularly the bifurcation point of the fixed point of the Poincare map. Using two bifurcation diagrams and a bifurcation set, it is shown how periodic orbits bifurcate and leads to chaotic state. It is also shown that the homoclinic bifurcations occur in some parameter regions and that the Li & Yorke conditions of the chaotic state hold in the parameter region which is included in the one where the homoclinic bifurcation occurs. Together with the above, the stable and unstable manifolds of a saddle closed orbit is illustrated and the existence of the homoclinic points is shown.

In this paper, a design method is described for very low sensitivity fully-balanced narrow-band band-pass switched-capacitor filters (SCF's) whose worst-case sensitivities of the amplitude responses become zero at every reflection zero. The proposed method is based on applying the low-pass to high-pass transformation, the pseudo two-path technique and the capacitance-ratio reduction technique to very low sensitivity low-pass SC ladder filters. A design example of the band-pass SCF with a quality factor Q

Low-sensitivity digital filters are required for accurate signal processing. Among many low-sensitivity digital filters, a method using complex allpass circuits is well-known. In this paper, a new synthesis of complex allpass circuits is proposed. The proposed synthesis can be realized more easily either only in the z-domain or in the s-domain than conventional methods. The key concept for the synthesis is based on the factorization of lossless scattering matrices. Complex allpass circuits are interpreted as lossless digital two-port circuits, whose scattering matrices are factored. Furthermore, in the cases of Butterworth, Chebyshev and inverse Chebyshev responses, the explicit formulae for multiplier coefficients are derived, which enable us to synthesize the objective circuits directly from the specifications in the s-domain. Finally design examples verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper studies multidimensional linear periodically shift-variant digital filters (LPSV filters). The notion of a generalized multidimensional transfer function is presented for LPSV filters. The frequency characteristic of the filters is discussed in terms of this transfer function. Since LPSV filters can decompose the spectrum of an input signal into some spectral partitions and rearrange the spectrum, LPSV filters can serve as a frequency scrambler. To show the effect of multidimensional frequency scramble, 2-D LPSV filters are designed based on the 1-D Parks-McClellan algorithm. The resultant LPSV filters divide the input spectrum into some components that are permuted and possibly inverted with keeping the symmetric of the spectrum. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of frequency scramble for real images.

In this paper, a methodology for designing the architecture of the processor array for wide class of image processing algorithms is proposed. A concept of spatially expanding the SFG description which enables us to handle the problem as merely one-dimensional signal processing is used in constructing the methodology. Problem of I/O interface which is critical in real-time processing is also considered.

A further study on a VLSI system compiler, named VEGA (VLSI Embodiment for General Algorithms), is presented. It maps a general digital signal processing algorithm onto a neo-systolic array, which is a VLSI oriented multiprocessor array. Highly complicated mapping problem is divided into subproblems such as modularization, operation grouping, processor placement, scheduling, control logic synthesis, and mask pattern generation. In this paper, the modularization technique is proposed which homogenizes all the operations of the processing algorithm to multiply-add operations. The processor placement algorithm to map processing algorithm onto a neo-systolic array so as to minimize data transfer time is also proposed.
In this paper we propose a new timing optimization technique for multi-level networks by restructuring multiple nodes simultaneously. Multi-output subcircuits on critical paths are extracted and resynthesized so that the delays of the paths are reduced. The complete design space of the subcircuits is captured by Boolean relations, which allow us to perform more powerful resynthesis than previous approaches using don't cares. Experimental results are reported to show the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

A distributed processing system is described, which is dedicated to multilayer SOG routing. The system is constructed of global and detailed routers, each based on different rip-up and rerouting procedures, so as to be run on a computer network composed of a number of workstations. Several implementation results attained for five-layer SOG are also shown to reveal the practicability of the system.

A file transmission net N is a directed communication net with vertex set V and arc set B such that each arc e has positive cost ca(e) and each vertex u in V has two parameters of positive cost cv(u) and nonnegative integral demand d(u). Some information to be distributed through N is supposed to have been written in a file and the written file is denoted by J, where the file means an abstract concept of information carrier. In this paper, we define concepts of file transfer, positive demand vertex set U and mother vertex set M, and we consider a problem of distributing d(v) copies of J through a file transfer on N from a vertex v1 to every vertex v in V. As a result, for N such that M

This paper treats mutual exclusion of a single shared-resource in distributed autonomous environments. The most important property of the autonomous network treated in this paper is its membership variability, that is, frequent occurrence of entries of new nodes and exits of old nodes. Thus, when the network is large-scale, it is not possible for each node to keet up the information of all other nodes. We in this paper design a mutual exclusion algorithm for distributed environments of autonomous nodes based on Chandy-Misra protocol for Dining Philosopher (diners) problems, which realizes a distributed implementation of the token ring method. We consider requirements of the communication topology that makes mutual exclusion possible, and propose entry and exit protocols for each node to perform them individualistically and autonomously.

Free choice nets are a class of Petri nets, which can represent the substantial features of systems by modeling both choice and concurrency. And in the modelling and design of a large number of concurrent systems, live and safe free choice nets (LSFC nets) have been explored their structural characteristics. On the other hand, state machine decomposable nets (SMD nets) are a class of Petri nets which can be decomposed by a set of strongly connected state machines (S-decomposition). State machine allocatable nets (SMA nets) are a well-behaved class of SMD nets. Of particular interest is the relation between free choice nets and SMA nets such that a free choice net has a live and safe marking if and only if the net is an SMA net. That is, the structure of an LSFC net is an SMA net. Recently, the structure of SMA net has been completely characterized by the authors based on an S-decomposition. In other words, a necessary and sufficient condition for a net to be an SMA net is obtained in terms of the net structure where synchronization between strongly connected state machine components (S-components) has been clarified. Unfortunately, it requires tremendous amount of time and spaces to decide a given net to be an SMA net by applying the condition directly. Moreover, there exist no efficient algorithm to decide the liveness and safeness of a given SMA net that lessens the usefulness of decomposition techniques. In this paper, we consider efficient polynomial order algorithms to decide whether a given net is a live and safe SHA net.

In a display system with a line-of-gaze (LOG) controller, it is difficult to make the directions and motions of a LOG-controlled object coincide as closely as possible in the display with the user's intended LOG-directions and motions. This is because LOG behavior is not only smooth, but also saccadic due to the problem of involuntary eye movement. This article introduces a flexible on-line LOG-control scheme to realize nearly perfect LOG operation. Using a mesh-wise cursor pattern, the first visual experiment elucidates subjectively that a Kalman Filter (KF) for smoothing and predicting is effective in filtering out macro-saccadic changes of the LOG and in predicting sudden changes of the saccade while movement is in progress. It must be assumed that the LOG trajectory can be described by a linear position-velocity-acceleration approximation of Sklansky Model (SM). Furthermore, the second experiment uses a four-point pattern and simulations to scrutinize the two physical properties of velocity and direction-changes of the LOG in order to quantitatively and efficiently resolve "moving" and "gazing". In order to greatly reduce the number of LOG-small-position changes while gazing, the proposed Gaze-Holding algorithm (GH) with a gaze-potential function is combined with the KF. This algorithm allows the occurrence frequency of the micro-saccade to be reduced from approximately 25 Hz to 1 or 2 Hz. This great reduction in the frequency of the LOG-controlled object moves is necessary to achieve the user's desired LOG-response while gazing. Almost perfect LOG control is accomplished by the on-line SM+KF+GH scheme while either gazing or moving. A menu-selection task was conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed on-line LOG-control method.
The main interest of this paper is the theoretical analysis of a recursive periodically time varying digital filter. The generalized transfer function of a recursive periodically time varying digital filter was obtained from its difference equation. It was proved that by making use of the generalized transfer function, we can not only derive the input and output relationship of a recursive periodically time varying digital filter easily but also obtain its equivalent structure effectively. An interesting property of a recursive periodically time varying digital filter was also derived by making use of its generalized transfer function. Moreover, it was completed in this paper the investigation of the generalized transfer functions and impulse responses of other periodically time varying models, including an input sampling polyphase model and an output sampling polyphase model. Meanwhile, the multirate Quadrature Mirror Filter bank system was proved by the authors to be a periodically time varying system. Several examples were also provided to illustrate the effectiveness of using the generalized transfer function to obtain the equivalent structure of a recursive periodically time varying digital filter.

Although the perception of gloss is based on human visual perception, some methods for measuring glossiness, in contrast to human ability, have been proposed involving plane surfaces. Glossiness defined in these methods, however, does not correspond with psychological glossiness perceived by the human eye over the wide range from relatively low gloss to high gloss. In addition, the change in the incident angle causes a deviation in the measurement of glossiness. A new method for measuring glossiness is proposed in this study. For the new definition of glossiness Gd, the brightness function is utilized. We also extract the value of smoothness of the object's surfaces for use as a factor of glossiness. The measuring equipment consists of a light source, an optical system and a personal computer. Glossiness Gd of paper and plastics is measured with the use of this equipment. In all samples, a strong correlation, with a correlation coefficient of more than 0.97, has been observed between Gd and psychological glossiness Gph. The variance of measured glossiness due to the change in the incident angle of light is small in comparison with that of conventional methods. Based on these findings, it has been found that this method is useful for measuring glossiness of plane objects in the range from relatively low gloss to high gloss.

A new class of the universal representation for the positive integers is proposed. The positive integers are divided into infinite groups, and each positive integer n is represented by a pair of integers (p,q), which means that n is the q-th number in the p-th group. It is shown that the new class includes the message length strategy as a special case, and the asymptotically optimal representation can easily be realized. Furthermore, a new asymptotically and practically efficient representation scheme is proposed, which preserves the numerical, lexicographical, and length orders.

A technique is presented for constructing (d,k) block codes capable of detecting single bit errors and single peak-shift errors in consecutive two runs. This constrains the runlengths in the code sequences to odd numbers. The capacities and the cardinalities for finite code length of these codes are described. A technique is also proposed for constructing (d,k) block codes capable of correcting single peak-shift errors.

Responses in the Nagumo neural circuit to pulse-train stimulation are studied using the time sequence, phase diagram, Poincare section, return map, firing rate, Lyapunov number and bifurcation diagram. For the mono-stable neuron with an equilibrium point deeper than the maximal point of a tunnel diode curve, main responses are periodic or all-or-none and chaotic responses are rarely observed. For the neuron with an equilibrium point located near the maximal point, the response to one input pulse oscillates after the undershoot and responses to pulse-trains make complex bifurcation structure in the threshold diagram. The ranges of periodic responses are stratified in the diagram. There exist broad regions of chaotic responses and chaos is not a special response of the Nagumo circuit, but it often comes out. The results are different from those obtained from Hodgkin-Huxley equations and the BVP model.

This letter extends the overfitting lattice filter for ARMA parameter estimation with additive noise proposed by Sun and Yahagi. A new way of calculating the lattice parameters is proposed, making their computation truly recursive. This simplifies the method in Ref.(1), and makes it suitable to the parameter estimation of high-order systems.
